Beer Review 134: Left Hand Wake Up Dead Imperial Stout

Brad

Hello Beer Friend Nation! Can you feel the chill in the air?  In NYC the leaves have fallen and snow is in the forecast - it's Stout season.  Stout season is wonderful how that dark beer you avoided in the hot months, suddenly becomes the brew you reach for to warm you up.  Traditionally, stouts should be served at room temperature - but depending on how lazy your landlord is... room temperature can vary drastically.  This week we try Left Hand Brewing Company's Imperial Stout - Wake Up Dead.  Left Hand is a favorite (see Milk Stout below) and recently featured on hashtag battles representing the Denver Broncos.  They are a favorite because the quality brews they have and continue to impress with Sawtooth on Nitro and the Fade to Black series.  Winter!  Dark Brews!  Beer!

Beer Review 133: Goose Island Bourbon County Stout 2012

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! The third installment of "Beer Geeks do Thanksgiving" features another true "beer geek" beer... Each year us "Brew Nerd's"  (Beer Geek was getting old) await yearly releases to come out.  Typically I'm excited for the fall/winter season because of football (see Hashtag Battles) and yearly stouts.  The two that come to mind are Founders Breakfast Stout and Goose Islands Bourbon County Stout.  We've reviewed Founders so now it's Goose Islands turn at the table.  Over the years we've tried a bunch of different styles aged in bourbon/whiskey/wine barrels, so let's see how this rich stout stacks up!

Beer Review 132: Upslope IPA

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Our Beer Friends Thanksgiving Advice Beer Buying Extravaganza (working title) continues!  Today we look at another delicious and Colorado based brew - Upslope IPA.  Upslope is an up-and-coming brewery from Boulder, Colorado with 4 current styles to date (IPA, Pale Ale, Craft Lager, Brown) and a focus on the environment.  Today we join in the Thanksgiving spirit by being thankful for Untappd and Greg Avola - which joins us on this review.

Beer Review 131: Odell Brewing Co Myrcenary Double IPA

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! We're back after technical difficulties (Brad was really lazy and couldn't get off the couch) and have only three days until Thanksgiving!  While the Beer Friends are thankful for beer, we would also like to be your go-to blog for thanksgiving beers.  Whether it be rare and  impressive beers that you can elevate your status to official "Beer Geek" around your friends or just some really good booze that has mom and dad worried and looking up numbers for AA - we've got you covered.

Today is a Beer Geek status beer - but not really hard to find if you live in Colorado or surrounding states.  Odell Brewing Company is out of Fort Collins, Colorado and been brewing delicious beer while New Belgium gets most of the love.  However - once people get a taste that usually all changes and while the fancy factory has reservation times and silly follies - Odell is brewing delicious beer with a laid back brewpub and parties every weekend.  Today we review Myrcenary 2xIPA - which features the essential oils of the hop cone with a citrusy punch.

Check back often for more beer buying suggestions this week - the true beer geek would be a little nervous about what beer to drink on Thanksgiving - meanwhile the turkey is burnt and stuffing is ruined... it can still be a good day.

Beer Review 130: Sixpoint Brownstone

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! For those of "The Beer Friend Nation" that is in the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy, we wish you safety and health in the days ahead, hopefully our stupid little blog can provide a few laughs in the process.

Today we review a brewery affected by Sandy, Sixpoint Craft Ales.  We've review everything we could get our hands on from Sixpoint, whether from Growlers, Cans or Live Blogs - and today we expand the can reviews with Brownstone, a true Brooklyn beer.  Brownstone is a Brown Ale named for the famous Brownstone's that line many Brooklyn streets.  Sixpoint Craft Ale's website calls it their "fortress" which I can only assume (and believe I heard somewhere) that this is their first brew... and if it is they knew what they were doing from the beginning.

To help and donate to relief efforts of Hurricane Sandy please visit the Red Cross website.

Beer Review 129: Speakeasy Vendetta IPA

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! San Francisco is home to a lot of things.  The NL West champion Giants, Alcatraz, Trolley Cars, Fog, Tony Bennetts heart... and two great breweries in Speakeasy and 21st Amendment.  Sadly, the Beer Friends haven't gotten to these fantastic breweries until Beer Review 126: Bitter American from 21st Amendment.  This week we try Speakeasy's Vendetta IPA.  Now, we've had some great brews from Speakeasy, and enjoyed a live blog or two - but this is the first time we've been able to get our sh*t together to get in front of a camera and give praise.  West Coast!  Bootlegger! New Breweries!

Beer Review 127: Founders Devil Dancer

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! This week we went back to an old format that works well, we: 1.)reviewed a Founders brew and 2.)had our friend Greg Avola join us.  Founders Brewing Co. has been a favorite of ours (why do I feel like I write that about every brewery every week?) and we've gone to great lengths - like many of us have - to find some of their rare beers (CBS anyone?).  We reviewed them many times - see the list after the video - and had the famed Brew York, New York review Founders Porter with us.  Now it's Untappd's turn... apparently we only offer the best for our guest.  Warning: This video is a bit longer because at 12% ABV and 112 IBU's, there is no way we could review this in anywhere close to 5 minutes... enjoy!

Beer Review 126: 21st Amendment Bitter American

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! With all the political ads flying around - this weeks beer was an inspired choice.  Actually it's just a delicious beer from San Francisco that we drink off camera a lot and wanted to enjoy on film for once.  Editors note: This was filmed before 21st Amendment announced that Bitter American was now a year round offering... which led to much rejoicing by these Beer Friends.  So kick back, download our podcast, and check out another great beer from some canning pioneers: 21st Amendment.  Cans!  Year Round!  Bitter (hops)!

Beer Review 124: New Belgium Ranger IPA

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! This week we return to New Belgium for a favorite style of ours, IPA.  New Belgium produced Ranger IPA in February of 2010 and has gotten rave reviews ever since.  Although New Belgium typically has a Belgian influence, Ranger IPA is a pretty big IPA at 6.5% and 70 IBU's.  Ranger!  IPA!  Beer!
