Hashtag Battles Season 2 - Week 1!

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles!  Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron.  Are you ready for some football? And drinking?  And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle?  When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN.  Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week One - Philadelphia Eagles at Cleveland Browns (#yardsbrew vs #greatlakesbrew)

Holy crap!  Professional football is back.  This week the real games start, Wednesday night was just a bunch of fanfare - or at least the Superbowl defending Giants thought so as they let the Dallas Cowboys come in and ruin their Superbowl trophy parade.  What irks me the most is Jerry Jones was actually correct!

Philadelphia is hoping to bounce back like the Miami Heat did in its second season.  Vince Young last year (he can be seen as your local sandwich artist or protesting outside a Payday checking establishment) declared them a Dream Team - as he played the role of Christian Laettner.  Philly fans are putting a lot of hope in a QB who's wearing a flak jacket for protection - which is ironic because he probably had one on that Virginia farm of his for "dog training".  Full circle indeed.

Yards Brewing never claimed to be a dream team, instead they brew the dream team of Revolutionary Ales by George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Poor Richard (Benjamin Franklin).  These beers (watch the reviews) are delicious and without any Laettner brews holding them down.

Cleveland Browns are wise beyond their years... they are actually sages that spent thousands of years in deep meditation Siddhartha style.  Brandon Weeden is understudy to Scott Bakula of the Necessary Roughness kind, after spending a few years playing baseball in minor league stadiums (similar crowds to that of Cleveland Browns Stadium - *Note: Sell the naming rights, because right now the stadium name is as original as the jersey design*) comes back and finds that huge strike zone to Justin Blackmon and sets some school records passing Mike "I'm a Man" Gundy in the process.  Add a star running back from a National Champion and you've got yourself the first rookie QB/RB team in 50 years (I guess they never asked why more people don't do that).  After a porous offensive line and no breakaway WR's, Weeden will sit back in the pocket and wait for his next "leap."

Great Lakes Brewing Company fills each bottle with a rich history of the Ohio river Valley region.  Eliot Ness (infamous Chicago area Prohibition age "The Untouchables" leader) is an Amber full of taste that it'll make you break the law.  Burning River is named for the amount of pollution found floating in the river that it is said to "ooze rather than flow" and catch on fire.  Dortmunder Gold was renamed from "The Heisman" (after John Heisman, the first trophy winner) back to the beer style it is.  Finally the legendary Edmund Fitzgerald Porter which is named for the freighter that sunk in Lake Superior.  With all these history lessons, I wonder if Weeden remembers these things, because they all happened in his early 20's.

Let the battle begin!  Tag with #yardsbrew #greatlakesbrew, the battle begins Sunday morning and ends Monday night... drink to support your teams!

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#bearrepublic) vs (#breckenridge), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We're starting on Saturday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Seventeen: Oakland Raiders (#BearRepublic) vs Denver Broncos (#Breckenridge)

Alright, we know that these two teams aren't actually playing each other - but they do battle for the one remaining playoff spot in the AFC.  With all the other divisions locking it up early and the Steelers with 11 wins safely in, there can be only one.

Oakland has been an up and down team.  With enough talent to secure the West a long time ago - penalties and injuries prevented them from popping the division champ cork earlier.  Now Oakland has given a small ransom to Cincinnati for Carson "INT machine" Palmer and finally (kinda) finding their stride.  With a game at home vs the Chargers (which was undoubtably thought of in preseason as a divisional crown battle), the Raiders are in a great place to advance if the Chargers play like the Chargers Against the Lions and not the Chargers Against the Ravens.  Bear Republic has been doing dynamite stuff for a while now and there's no stopping them now.  Bear Republic has one beer that always pops up, Racer 5 and never disappoints.  Along with Mach 10 (double IPA) and Red Rocket I never know which to pick, but rest assured - I'll be happy (and drunk after a few Mach 10's) and that's when my own personal fouls come in to play...

The Denver Broncos went from the Andrew Luck sweepstakes to playoff contenders.  Riding the Tebow train to a 7-1 record in 8 games, the Broncos, Denver and the entire Mountain Time Zone were riding high.  A blowout loss to New England didn't derail the train - Tebow played well.  A blowout loss to Buffalo with 3 or 4 INT's (depending when you're reading this) starts the doubts up again.  Typically its a team game, but a INT and fumble both returned for a TD in 18 seconds of game play hurts any team efforts.  But Tebow lovers rejoice, there is still hope in a "win and you're in" scenario in Denver this week and the Denver Tebows could reach the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.  The Rub?  Kyle Orton, the first QB to face a team he started for earlier in the season... will Tebow or Orton come out victorious?  Meanwhile the real QB's of the league (Brady, Brees, Rodgers) look down on these mere morals from the Mount Olympus of Passer Rating and wonder what it's like on the other side.  Breckenridge Brewery is a old Colorado favorite with multiple locations across the state.  Recently Breckenridge has been popping up in NYC and the Beer Friends are thrilled.  The classic Avalanche Ale and Vanilla Porter are the vets of the brewing team and Small Batch 471 is coming on strong -

We're starting on Sunday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Twelve: Carolina Panthers (#duckrabbit) vs Tampa Bay Bucs (#cigarcity)

We can't ignore the fan mail any longer.  Tampa Bay Bucs and Cigar City want a rematch.  This young and fiery football team turned the football world upside down last year winning with young and very little talent.  Coming into this season they were supposed to challenge the Saints and Falcons for the division but instead have fallen to 4-7 after 5 straight loses (thank god for San Diego or this would be the worst in the league!).  Tampa Bay sometimes plays inspired ball with a young QB in Josh Freeman and with LaGarrette Blount hitting his running holes things could be on the rise.  However this week they play another young team in Carolina and Freeman is out - they might catch San Diego after all.  Cigar City always brews with inspiration.  After a tough match up in week 1, they are back to play a divisional rival in Duck Rabbit, let's see if they learned from their earlier game and turn the tables on the Carolina's first time in the hashtag battle arena.

Carolina has a lot of plus to this mostly minus of a season.  Last year under John Fox (who's winning in Denver with Tebow and Jesus as is co-coaches) they when 1-15 and selected Cam "I'll play anywhere as long as my dad gets paid" Newton to QB a defensive minded team with Rivera taking over from San Diego.  At 3-8 they've already tripled their win totals and Cam is throwing it all over the field (and not only to the DB's from the other team!).  With a tough schedule ahead (Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans) and a hot and cold team twice (Tampa Bay), the season is still very much in flux.  Who knows, a low draft pick to help Cam on the offensive might be exactly what they need to get back into the NFC South race.  Duck Rabbit is a small brewery with a big following.  In my life the Milk Stout became something of legend when it started popping up on Untappd.com and when I finally had it, it was well worth the wait.  This brewery is young but growing with the talent they have - can the Panthers and Duck Rabbits co-exist and will youth prevail in this weeks hashtag battle?

Week Twelve: Rematch! Denver Broncos (#greatdivide) vs San Diego Chargers (#ballastpoint)

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable.  Pre-season I thought there was NO WAY we'd be in the hunt for the division title and felt that Tebow would sit most of the year, develop that throwing motion and we'd give it the old college try next year.  How wrong was I (except on the throwing motion part... jeez that's bad).  The Broncos have found their motivation and he sure does love Jesus - everyone seems to  have an opinion on Tebow and even the concept of "play to win the game" is tossed out the window because his mechanics.  Now I'm on a soapbox here and probably shouldn't be speaking for all Bronco fans but... We know he needs help in the throw/accuracy/strength department - we're not idiots, but the team rallies around him and plays their asses off for him - isn't that what you want in a leader?  Someone leading your football team?  Great Divide is always a leader.  Unbelievable brews are the name of their game and they are constantly winning awards and re-developing themselves (check the variations on Yeti Stout).  While one winning is unexplainable (2 for 8?!?!? Really Chiefs?) the other is easily explained... maybe this yin and yang will matchup in harmony to win this weeks Hashtag battle.

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable (Trust me, this is a new paragraph).  Misery loves company and a San Diego loss can be as good as a Denver win on somedays, but this is a new style for San Diego.  Typically slow starters, fast finishers, and out in the first round of the playoffs, the Norv Turner's might not even make the playoffs this year.  Typical all-star Philip Rivers can't connect with his receivers when it counts (but has awesome garbage time numbers) and the special teams are at it again this year-fumbling the game away.  Apparently the typically soft AFC West isn't gonna take it and there will be a fight for the right to be knocked out in the first round this year.  Ballast Point is another themed brewery out of San Diego, but -trust me- order a Black Marlin Porter and you'll start calling all porters Black Marlins.  The Sculpin IPA won gold in 2010 World Beer cup along with a little "brewer of the year" award... you know... no big deal. Perhaps Ballast Point can tutor Rivers in their winning ways and guide San Diego back to the playoffs (although I kinda hope not...).

We're starting on Sunday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Nine - Chicago (#gooseisland) vs Philadelphia (#victory)

Chicago is in trouble.  It all started last year as their season hung in the balance and Jay Cutler couldn't come back on the field.  Instead of explaining to the national TV audience that he sprained his knee and couldn't play - the Bears allowed him to keep his pads on and sit on a bike on the sidelines - then the tweets started rolling in.  The off-season was filled with questions and everybody in Chicago defending Jay - and the interesting Sports illustrated article "Jay Cutler doesn't care what you think".  Now the NFC North (Norris division) is controlled by the undefeated Packers and the up-and-coming Lions which leaves the Bears lumped in with the Vikings (which always play a dynamite first half and then leave their abilities in the locker room for the second half) in the bottom of the division.  But alas there's hope - the season is barely half way over and Cutler has a rocket arm - so there's always a chance...  Goose Island became one of the most talked about breweries in the nation after being bought out by Budweiser.  The marriage was inevitable with the same distribution companies and a craft brewery that's far enough away from anything Bud produces to make it worth while... Then came the aftermath of tweets and people embarrassing themselves at bars - looks like both these franchises are in need of a little face saving and re-birth.

Philadelphia was in trouble - until they won last week and are safe - until they possibly lose this week (also, people are ignoring the fact that they need to rattle off 9 wins in a row to be 12-4 and guarantee a playoff spot) but that's the future and let's look at the now.  The self proclaimed "Dream Team" can be the most exciting team on the field because they only beat themselves.  Last week they looked fantastic against the Cowboys (and those Eagle WR's helped me win a fantasy football matchup) - but they've also self-destructed and had multiple turnover games which resulted in the current 3-4 record.  Unlike the up and down Eagles, Victory Brewing always comes ready to play.  Located outside of Philly - this is a delicious brewery that is always a pleasure to see at the bar.  One Beer Friend still always goes for the Prima Pils and this Beer Friend always enjoys one of their two stouts (Stormking and Donnybrook) on a nitro pour.  While Victory constantly lives up to their good name, can the Eagles join them and win this weeks hashtag battle?

Week Eight- Cleveland Browns vs San Francisco 49ers (#greatlakes vs # 21stAmendment)
Cleveland Browns always have a soft spot in my heart.  Being a Broncos fan, we were the bane of their existence in the 80's then in the 90's the team was stolen away from them.  They constantly try to make the correct personel moves and finally have a all-star running back... that's on the cover of Madden 12, and sitting out multiple games this year.  Can the Browns ever catch a break?  The city of Cleveland has caught a break in Great Lakes Brewing Company.  This is a legendary brewery producing delicious beers (including their Christmas Ale seasonal and Edmund Fitzgerald porter winner of MANY awards) and only distributing to the Ohio River Valley region.  Having lived in the area and having friends still located there - I'm always quick to ask for a sampler pack to enjoy in NYC.  Can Great Lakes Brewing Company help out the Browns and combine to win this week's hashtag battle?
San Francisco 49ers are having a fantastic year.  On top of the lowly NFC West with more wins than the rest of the division combined(3-15) the 49ers are on top of the world and a firm handshake to prove it!  Even though nobody can name anyone on that team (Braylon Edwards? That small handed Smith guy?) the 49ers are 5-1 with a solid lead to make the playoffs (2/4 of NFC are already eliminated) and the winning ways of the 90's are back in San Fran.  Winning is nothing new to 21st Amendment.  Always producing quality beers in cans and smaller batches - these brews are always a treat to find.   With these two winners combining forces can the powerhouses create team chemistry and produce a winner?  Or are they the Philly Eagles?

Hashtag Battle Week Five Matchup: Buffalo vs NY Giants (#southerntier vs #riverhorse)

Buffalo is the Darling of the NFL.  A great storyline with victories then a slight hiccup in week 4 but back on track in week 5 against the "Dream Team" (currently the 1-4 Eagles).  With the Jets struggling and currently owning the Tie-Breaker against the Patriots, can the Bills hold on to compete in the AFC East and turn the clock back to the 90's?  Thurman Thomas where are you?!?!  Southern Tier is a big brewery producing quality brews.  In fact they are bring their quality brews down to the Pony Bar later in October.  Southern Tier is on the rise and the Buffalo Bills are on the rise again - all this sunshine might be enough to melt some of that year round snow in Upstate New York!

The Giants are always a question mark.  Living in New York you can never get the real story on ANYTHING going on with the teams.  A first week lost to NFC rival Washington and everyone is questioning Eli, three straight wins and "The Giants are going to the Superbowl!" and a loss (at home) to Seattle and Tom Coughlin has to go.  While the Giants and their media might be slightly bi-polar, the brewing at River Horse continues to impress.  River Horse has constantly impressed with the Beer Friends and helped us produce one of our favorite reviews ever.  Even recently the Beer Friends found a Hipp-O-Lantern aged in a Bourbon barrel that was dynamite! Maybe River Horse can up production, hand a few to the coaching staff and NY media and everyone can have a good time, until they lose again and then heads will roll...

Hashtag Battles Week Three!

And because football needs beer, we're starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Three - New York Giants vs Philadelphia Eagles (#sixpoint vs #yardsbrew)

Giants have had a up and down season.  The pre-season was ravished by injuries and the first week loss to Washington that still can't decide on a starting QB (Beck looked better in the preseason) were followed by a brilliant Monday night performance against the up and coming St. Louis Rams - I'm still thinking about the Hixon catch.  Sixpoint was recently voted the best beer to represent New York state and for good reason, with the recent release of cans, Sixpoint is on the up and up.  Can both continue to rise in this weeks hashtag battle?

Philly was the talk of the off-season.  Sure New England added a bunch of players but Philly broke the bank and picked up some of the gems of the free-agent class (must have been a weak offensive line free agent class - even Mike Vick couldn't escape last week).  Yards is a infamous brewery amongst the Beer Friends because you can't get it in New York and have to travel across the Hudson for a taste (Every trip has been worth it).  I even had a Yards dry-hopped IPA that I couldn't see straight after, much like Vick after the Falcons game.  Can both of these major players live up to the hype and impress by the end of the season?  Tune in to find out!

Update! Although the G-Men dominated in this game, #yards came out on top - maybe a nice cool @yardsbrew would help the swelling in Mike Vick's hand...

Week Two - Chicago vs New Orleans (#twobrothersbeer vs #theabitabeer)

Chicago, the Windy City, is full of footballs in the air with Jay Cutlers arm and Mike Martz offensive scheme. They got off to a great start last week taking out Peter King's Superbowl pick Atlanta Falcons and now continue their NFC South tour with former Superbowl Champion Saints. Chicago is also home to a few great breweries that aren't purchased by large corporations - enter Two Brothers Brewing. Two Brothers Brewing is kept in the family by Jim and Jason Ebel and producing quality brews since 1996, will the new combo of Cutler and Martz help the old combo of Jim and Jason win this weeks Hashtag Battle?

New Orleans has been in the news for the right and wrong reasons: the horrific hurricane and the rise and rebuilding efforts of the Saints football team and more specifically Drew Brees. Abita also has it's own rebuilding efforts with their S.O.S. Weizen Pils (Save Our Shores). So New Orleans plays the heart strings card and plays good football, produces good beer and (hopefully) wins this (very) important hashtag battle.

Week One - Detroit vs Tampa Bay (#atwater vs #cigarcity)

The Detroit Lions showed promise all off season, in fact they almost lived up to the high standards of their brew producing state.  Michigan has had many delicious breweries throughout the years and Atwater from Detroit just adds to the list.  Atwater has a full lineup and a growing demand should make Atwater a difficult opponent.

The Tampa Bay Bucs are young and fiesty - led by a young coach and younger QB they play in the always up for grabs NFC South division, can youthfulness prevail over the old guard?  Tampa Bay is in Florida, but the Beer Friends live in NYC - so needless to say we don't know a lot about the Tampa Bay beer scene, but we do have a favorite beer from down south, Cigar City Jai Alai.  This is a delicious and refreshing IPA and paired with the Maduro Oatmeal Brown - should make things interesting in this weeks hashtag battle.

Let the battle begin!  Tag with #atwater or #cigarcity, the battle begins Saturday morning and ends Monday night... drink to support your teams!

Update!  Atwater won this match up - mirroring what the Lions did to the Bucs... could this mean that the brewery we support the most wins the football game?  I think we need a bigger sample size...
