Featured Brewery: Dostal Alley Brewery

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Central City is a small Colorado Gambling town with a big heart.  Located 45 minutes West of Denver, Central City is often over-shadowed by Blackhawk which is a slightly large gambling town down the road, before you get to Central City, but one thing that Blackhawk will never have is the Dostal Alley Brewpub and Casino.  Dostal Alley is a casino, family dining establishment, and brew pub - but just like the hills of Colorado - there's some hidden gold, you just have to pan for it.  Dostal Alley offers a variety of beer styles including their own Root beer and cream soda which are worth the in-between of a stout and porter.  The brewmaster Buddy Schmalz discusses the history of brewing (with Dave Thomas) in Gilpin County and continues the tradition while also adding to it.

Shaft House Stout is a favorite of this Beer Friend and the reason he drug the Beer Friends group to Central City and put Shaft House Stout in the first BFF4 (Beer Friends Final Four).  This is a delicious dark brew that isn't overpowering but flavorful still.  This is refreshing, but not filling - allowing you to have one more (responsibly) before getting a growler fill and heading home.  I had plenty of growlers of this delicious brew over the 8 months I lived in Central City and somehow believe I am better for it.

Jacob Mack is a American style mild ale brewed with local hops.  This is a great thing going for Central City, local hop production, in fact Westwood (a local paper) declared Central City a great place to harvest hops and Dostal Alley is brewing a American IPA (Gilpin Gold) with the same kind of hops.

1874 Smoked Porter is named for the 1874 fire that burned most of downtown Central City, so the brewmaster has a sense of humor...  Although responsible for leveling a small Colorado mining town, 1874 Smoked Porter isn't terribly smoky and shockingly refreshing for a porter.  Continuing the local flare, 1874 Smoked Porter uses Colorado malts and continues to impress.

Overall, Dostal Alley is worth the trip - the Brew Pub is open 24/7 as of July 1st, 2010.
