Hashtag Battles Season 2 - 2nd Round

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Just when you thought Hashtag Battle fun was over, the NFl's second season begins... live on Hashtag Battles!

2nd Round - Seattle Seahawks vs Atlanta Falcons (#widmerbrosbrew vs #Atlantabrewco)

This week features the second day of exciting playoff football - a situation which the Seahawks are thrilled to be in and the Falcons are trying to advance past.  The Seahawks are possibly the most dangerous team in the playoffs with a killer defense and "beast mode" running back, and the Falcons have struggled to find playoff success (much less the endzone) in previous years.  With the high scoring affairs yesterday, this game is completely up for grabs as the Falcons nervously prepare and the Seahawks continue their East Coast tour.  Let's see who advances in this week's hashtag battle!

2nd Round - Seattle Seahawks vs Atlanta Falcons (#widmerbrosbrew vs #Atlantabrewco)

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two fan bases against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

The Seattle Seahawks make a living being the underdog.  They have the 12th Man (that is outside of College Station) and even with that extra support they still don't make enough noise to get respect around the league.  Is it because of the Northwest location?  Is it because people are tired of following the "Pete Carroll Adventures in Coaching"?  Well, they are overlooked no more - a fearsome defense that RG3 took one look at and tore a LCL - then played 3 more quarters with Shanahan telling him to "rub some dirt on it".  The Seahawks are also not overlooked by the NFL front office either and both of their all-star (in tweeting and football) cornerbacks got busted for Adderall.  How amazing is it that this team succeeds with two ADHD cornerbacks... I'm surprised they can focus enough to produce so many coverage sacks. Sherman chose the Ryan Braun defense, not disputing the test results but the means in which the test was conducted - which makes us think "what do all these testing guys have against big time, suddenly successful athletes?"  Sherman fought the suspension and played each and every week, and the Seahawks kept winning.  Now they face a team with two fantastic WR's and a QB trying to earn that elite tag - this was the week to take all that adderall.

Widmer Brothers Brewery from Portland, Oregon produces fantastic brews and I'm always excited to see one in NYC.  The Rotator series makes its way around quite often and focuses on big hop flavor.  In addition to the Rotator series, Drift Pale, Brr Seasonal, Pitch Black IPA have all shown up around bars in the city.  Currently I'm aging an Old Embalmer and patiently waiting until next winter to crack that one open.  According to Beertown.org and their Craft Brewing Statistics, Widmer Brothers is ranked 3rd nationally in craft breweries - which means more beer for everyone and even more beer for me from those people that don't drink!

The Atlanta Falcons are playing with a monkey on their back, a huge-can't-win-a-playoff-game-gorilla-sized-monkey.  This is the story that started in week 10 when the Falcons clinched a post-season spot and everybody remembered last years 2 point performance against the eventual Superbowl Champion Giants.  The season before they were beaten 48-21 by the eventual Superbowl Champion Packers, and two years before that lost in the wild card round to the eventual NFC Champion Cardinals.  The Falcons will try to flip the pattern and become that Superbowl winner or NFC Champion - but the future also looks promising for the Seahawks if they happen to win.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel for this Falcon team, last week Seattle's best pass rusher went down and as long as the Falcons can have a balanced attack, they might be able to play point for point against the Seahawks and the "Russell Wilson Option Show," playing another "playoff themed" high scoring affair.  With the Pats and Texans playing in the late game, we could see every team score 28 points or more - and who says defense wins championships...

Atlanta Brewing Company started in 1993 and is the oldest operating craft brewery in Metro Atlanta.  Doesn't seem like that long ago, but considering two of the giants of the industry: Samuel Adams was started only 10 years earlier, Sierra Nevada 13 years earlier; 1993 is pretty early in the craft beer game.  They started with Red Brick Ale and branched out from there with a Red Brick Peachtree Pale Ale, Red Brick Brown Ale, Red Brick Blonde and Red Brick Porter.  Even their seasonals get in on the Red Brick naming; Red Brick Spring Helluva Bock, Red Brick Summer Hefeweizen and Red Brick Winter - I guess when something isn't broke... no need to fix it.  The Red Brick Blonde won a Gold Medal at GABF in 2007, shortly after they expanded to Alabama, Tennessee and Florida.  In 2010 they branded themselves as the Red Brick Brewing Company as they continued to expand.  As the company continues to grow, I can't wait to get my hands on some, or at least for the next name change.

Hashtag Battles Season 2 - Week 10!

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Week Ten -  New York Jets at Seattle Seahawks (#riverhorsebeer vs #redhookbeer)

Hashtag Battles goes coast to coast as a AFC East media darling meets a NFC West media darling.  The Jets make headline not for their play, but for their refusal to play certain "savior like" backup QB's.  The Seahawks make headlines for their play, which is as inconsistant as a meteorologist these days. As the second half of the hashtag battle season begins - let's see who'll be making headlines for the right reasons in the second half!

Week Ten -  New York Jets at Seattle Seahawks (#riverhorsebeer vs #redhookbeer)

As an emerging media outlet, we at The Beer Friends feel the need to talk about the Jets.  Even in the wake of a Hurricane up the East Coast and a hotly contested Presidential election, Rex Ryan is still getting airtime, defending himself as "The Most Overrated Coach" in a Sporting News poll.  However, instead of enlisting Karl Rove, Rex laughed off the criticism and went back to what he does best: avoiding Tim Tebow playing time questions.  The Jets are 3-5 and 3rd in the AFC East.  With the Pats safe at the top and the Dolphins surging, the Jets need to win and get a little help.  What they don't need is Cromartie claiming the Jets will make the playoffs - but this team has gotten hot before and (technically) Sanchez has led them to AFC Championship games before.  With the second half of the season starting, the Jets need a hot streak and with games against a few contenders (Seattle, New England, San Diego) and a few that are watching college football for future teammates (Jacksonville, Tennessee, Buffalo) we'll see if they can put up or shut up - but who are we kidding?  We know they'll never do the latter.

River Horse Brewing Company is from Lambertville, New Jersey...which is about the same distance to Met Life as NYC, so they jump into the mix!  River Horse is also a delicious brewery that has gotten the Beer Friends' attention more than once in these 2.5 years of reviews.  Although this is a Belgian influenced brewery, even Phil tends to enjoy these brews.  With a hippo on the label and big flavor inside, Hop-O-Lot-Amus 2xIPA and Hop Hazard are available year round and Hipp-O-Lantern and Belgian Freeze are seasonals worth waiting for.

The last time we saw the Seattle Seahawks on hashtag battles, they fought against the Detroit Lions in a close 28-24 match.  That was the Seahawks' first loss outside their division... and they are 5-4.  This is not shaping up well for the end of the year come playoff time if tiebreakers are needed for the Seahawks.  Currently, they are 2nd in the NFC West but 0-3 in the division - but the good news is it's the second half.  And the bad news? They could go 0-6.  However, that drama will have to play out way down the line as the Seahawks finish their divisional schedule in the last month of the season.  Currently, the Seahawks have two corners that talk big and play bigger.  These corners are a huge reason (along with a relentless pass rush) that the Seahawks are ranked 7th in Pass Defense - which only improves the play of the offense in practice, although with the bombs that R Wilson throws, I'd imagine 7 on 7 drills look more like games of 500.

Redhook Brewery comes from Washington but covers the East Coast with a brewery in Portsmouth, NH. They have traditional styles like a ESB, Wit, Pilsner, and Longhammer IPA - but the flavors are anything but traditional. On-air, the IPA has been described as having an "ice tea airiness" and behind the scenes, the Wit has been called delicious. With an innovative bottle design that jumps off the shelves, expect more on-air reviews and behind the scenes drinking.

Week Eight -  Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions (#RogueBeer vs #Founders)

These are two hard to figure teams of the NFL season so far.  The Detroit Lions coming off a playoff appearance and Seahawks starting a rookie midget - sorry... little person at QB.  But the Lions have been a disappointment and find themselves in the familiar confines of the NFC Norris Division basement and the Seahawks have done it with the help of Replacement Ref's... Let's see who's an actual pretender or contenter in this weeks Hashtag Battle!

The Seahawks have been a interesting story in the past few years.  They bring in Pete Carroll who hit the eject button before sanctions came down on USC, and Pete brings a surfboard regularly to practice in his fun loving "I'm a cool college coach" persona.  Result? A 5-11 season which would have placed them in the middle of the pack in the then "Pac 12".  But the next season they made the playoffs! ... As a 7-9 team.  Regardless of the record they played like they belonged and pulled an upset over the visiting (and defending Superbowl Champion) Saints.  Last season they finished with an identical 7-9 record, but the much improved NFC West passed them by and they finished in 3rd place.  This season they've benefited from the "Worst Call in NFL History"  (echo echo echo) and Golden Tate proved that his elbow could bend the other way for joint possession.  Since that call they've been 2-2 and Rookie QB Russel Wilson has been slinging it - throwing bombs against the Pats in New England paved the way for the upset (although if he through on a line he'd throw it into the lower back of his O-line).  They've got a mixed bag of games ahead and we'll see how Wilson fares for the rest of the season - as long as they have that camera directly above the field, or give him a stack of phonebooks to stand on.

Rogue Ales is a favorite of one Northwestern Beer Friend and very well liked by the others.  Shakespeare Stout on Nitro is a brew I'll never pass up and the John John series continues to produce excellent beers in a distillery/brewery collaboration.  Rogue is still legendary in the Beer Friends circle for the excellent Rogue Oysters Event at Blind Tiger and the Chipotle Ale has enough kick to make you feel like you're alive, right before you grab that glass of water.  With a percentage of proceeds going to the Oregon Coast Aquarium from a speciality brew series, what's not to love?

The Detroit Lions are back! In the basement... These badboys of the off-season set personal records for arrest, 7 total arrest by 4 players (I bet they'd kill for that record - don't get any ideas Lions players...) which caused the Lions management to crack down and attempt to control the team.  After a few successful weeks of police radio silence, the Lions are 2-4, and they blame their poor play on that: I would blame the house arrest ankle bracelets.  While the Detroit Tigers struggled in the regular season and made it to the playoffs, the Lions chances slip away with each week.  Upcoming they have a winnable games against the MJD-less Jags and the forever in re-building mode Colts, but still two games against an angry Packers squad and two of the last undefeated teams in the league in the Texans and Falcons.  With their current play, it looks like a longer off-season in which I'd advise Detroit area residents to lock your doors and hide your valuables.

Founders Brewing - nestled perfectly in the palm of the mitten, constantly provides delicious beers in every style and all year round - this is a can't miss.  From their year round offerings of Dry Hopped Pale Ale, Red's Rye PA and Porter - to the delicious seasonal's of Breakfast Stout, Nemesis, Devil Dancer, and even the hard to find beers like Old Curmudgeon's Better Half and the infamous CBS (Canadian Breakfast Stout) - they are all-stars.  Recently I found a Frangelic Mountain Brown ale brewed with Hazelnut Coffee - which sent me searching for basic brown recipes to add favored coffee to (in the brewing, not like a Arnold Palmer... Although...).  Granted, living in NYC we only see what they send nationally and I can only assume they've missed on one or two beers - but a fella can dream right?

Hashtag Battle Week Ten!

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#heavyseas vs #Elysian), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We're starting on Sunday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Ten - Baltimore (#HeavySeas) vs Seattle (#Elysian)

Baltimore has had a interesting season - they can't lose against their arch-rival Steelers, yet drop games to Tennessee and Jacksonville which are led by quarterbacks equaling 65 years of age (Matt Hasselback has 50 of those years). Baltimore's always known for defense and a stout running game but the addition of Joe Flacco (how bad does everyone want him to be Falco from "The Replacements"? - just me?) and this year they revive the career of the Medicinal Marijuana RB himself, Ricky Williams. With this team flying high, can the rest of the AFC North keep up? Heavy Seas Brewery from Baltimore has a Pirate themed brew line that even makes Johnny Depp blush. Cleaver names like Peg Leg (Imperial Stout) and Loose Cannon (3IPA) overshadow the delicious beer lurking in the bottles themselves. Can both of these guys continue the trend and win this weeks #hashtag battle?

Oh Seattle. Remember that Superbowl a few years back? Then the first team with a losing record to make the playoffs... and Win!?!? (Thanks to a earthshaking run in Beast mode). Now your 2-6 in 2nd place in the NFC West and on the clock - talk about a up and down season. One thing that's never down is Elysian brewing. This Seattle brewery has produced delicious beer at their three brew pubs for years and recently started a collaboration with New Belgium brewery from Colorado - a major player out West In the craft beer scene. As both these products are building up can they build together to win this weeks #hashtag battle?
