Hashtag Battles Week Fifteen!

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#) vs (#speakeasy), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We're starting on Saturday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Fifteen: Pittsburgh Steelers (#rollingrock) vs San Francisco 49ers (#speakeasy)

This is gonna be a good one.  These are two smash mouth football teams and classic old school beers (Rolling Rock) and old school styles (Speakeasy) to compete in this week's hashtag battle.

The Steelers are a constant powerhouse.  Built on toughness (see Big Ben's ankle injury last week), they pride themselves on being the hardest hitting (sometimes illegal - Ask Colt McCoy, if he remembers his name) bullies on the block.  If they were a beer they'd be a bourbon barrel aged, 18 ABV stout from Dogfish Head - in your face.  However, their playoff road right now looks to be the 5th seed unless the Ravens slip up and Steelers take the division, but the Ravens, with games against San Diego (voted most likely to implode), Cleveland (most likely to not remember the game the day after) and Cincinnati (most likely to be successful in future years), make the Division crown outlook for the Steelers bleak.  However Steelers fans... there is hope.  Remember a few years back how the Steelers gained the Wild Card, took care of Cincinnati, beat the Colts at Indy, and rolled through an overhyped Denver team (really, like Jake Plummer is gonna lead any team anywhere but the bar... or handball court) on way to the Superbowl?  At least that year the Seahawks made the playoffs with a winning record...  Rolling Rock from Latrobe, PA is an American icon.  So often the choice of beer drinkers that wanted to avoid those big beer companies... Rolling Rock seemed like a craft beer.  Man was everyone wrong, however, Rolling Rock still has a special place in the Beer Friends' heart and a lot about them seems very Pennsylvania, gritty tough and unrelenting on the palate.  Two wrongs make a right, so do two toughs make a hashtag win?  We'll see this week.

San Francisco had been struggling with poor coaching for a number of years and seem to have found their man.  If it wasn't for a coach in Denver with a converted RB to QB - The NFL's answer to Brother Grimm - the Harbaughs would be a shoe in for the Coach of the Year.  The truth is that the franchise has been building a O-line, Defense, and running game for years (see: Frank Gore) and just needed the final piece (a Michigan man) to guide them!  San Francisco is rolling into the playoffs - but needs to remember to slow down for the speed bumps like Arizona (and later - Seattle and St. Louis) or the hopes and dreams (read: Home field advantage) might fall out the back.  Speakeasy is a delicious brewery, creating old school style brews with big taste.  Speakeasy was the first brew that I had from a Merlot barrel and I've been on their sideline ever sense.  With two eyes inviting you to try their style, Speakeasy takes you back to the speakeasy days - where all you can do is shut up and drink.
