Beer Review 90: Rogue John John Ale

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! This week we traveled back to the Northwest for Rogue Breweries John John Ale.  Rogue has a few solid beers - Shakespeare Stout and Dead Guy Ale, and they've gotten into the practice of aging these brews in different liquor barrels and finding out (enjoyably) what they taste like after a few months.  The John John Ale that the Beer Friends got their hands on this week was their Hazelnut Brown Nectar aged in hazelnut Rum barrels and created a unique taste.  Like every week, find the bottle, enjoy while watching and leave a comment or two below!  Barrel aging!  Northwest!  Beer creativity!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of May 15, 2011

Graham

I woke up this morning with great expectations.  The sun was shining, a warm summer breeze blowing through the air, the smell of blossoming plants and then I opened my eyes.  Rain.  Thunder.  Fog.  And it was cold.  And it will be happening all week long.  Then I looked at the list of craft beer events happening this week.  The clouds parted, the sun came back out and the annoying spitting from the dense fog that engulfed the city transformed into a soft mist reminiscent of the Irish countryside.  Yea, craft beer has that affect on me. Tuesday, May 17 - Empire Brewing Company Night @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan:

Imagine you were taking a boat trip down the Erie Canal (10 points if you know where the Erie Canal is) rafting through the port towns of Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo and you wanted a beer.  The obvious choice is Empire Brewing Company.  Started in Syracuse and at

times brewing in Buffalo and Rochester it is Western New York's favorite brewery.  They'll be bringing an impressive selection of their brews (which are all impressive) to Rattle n' Hum this Tuesday.    Check out this list of brews:

Empire Brown Ale Empire Wheat Wine Empire IPA (Falconers Flight) Empire Maple Porter

Empire State Pale Ale Deep Purple 2010 Barley Wine 2009 Barley Wine Aged in a Heaven Hill Bourbon Barrel Empire Light Lager Empire Amber Ale Empire Cream Ale White Aphro Black magic Stout

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Wednesday, May 18 - Great Brewers Beer Tasting @ George Keeley's, Manhattan:

Great Brewers is a group that represents some of the greatest brewers internationally and in the US.  Their draughts are most easily recognized by the light wood tap handles with the Great Brewers seal.  When you get a pour from one of those tap handles, you know you're getting something good.  Green Port (Long Island), Ballast Point (California), Hitachino (from Hong Kong), Schekerla (Germany) and La Rulles (Belgium).  After all nothing is more international than Long Island.  Here's the list:

Greenport Harbor Black Duck Porter, Greenport Harbor Harbor Ale, Greenport Harbor Canard Noir, Greenport Harbor Ahtamaic IPA, Greenport Harbor Rye Saison Cask, Ballast Point Yellow Tail Pale Ale, Ballast Point Abandoned Ship, Ballast Point Wahoo Wheat, Hitachino Ginger, Schekerla Smoked Lager and La Rulles Triple.

George Keeley's is located at 485 Amsterdam Avenue between 83th and 84th streets, Upper West Side, Manhattan.

Wednesday, May 18 - Victory Night @ The Double Windsor, Brooklyn:

Some would say napalm in the morning smells like victory.  We say hops anytime smells like victory.  And Victory. The winningest brewing company ever will be visiting the Double Windsor in Brooklyn this Wednesday.  And they'll be helping you achieve victory with some of their best brews:

Hop Wallop Imperial IPA Hop Devil IPA Yakima Glory Black IPA Headwaters Pale Ale Whirlwind Wit St. Boisterous Hellerbock St. Victorious Dopplebock Braumeister Pils Donnybrook Stout

All for $5 and the first person to bring the bartender a bag of Milano cookies gets a free pint.  Milano's = victory.

The Double Windsor is located at 210 Prospect Park West between 14th and 15th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Wednesday, May 18 - Oregon Beer Night @ The Stag's Head, Manhattan:

Beer president of America?  Colorado.  Beer vice president of America?  Oregon.  Oregon, the state, with the help of its best breweries will be showcasing its history of brewing tradition.  Join Rogue, Elysian, Full Sail and Dick's at the Stag's Head to celebrate all things Oregon.  Well, mostly just the beer.  And Phil.

The Stag's Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Upper East Side, Manhattan.

Thursday, May 19 - River Horse Tap Takeover @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Here at the Beer Friends we try to be equal-opportunity when it comes to the neighborhoods, counties and states in the New York City metropolitan area.  Certain places get a bad rap with the rest of the world - Murray Hill, Staten Island and Jersey.  Well, River Horse is working to redeem New Jersey's image with the beer world and they're doing a damn good job at it.  They'll be taking over the taps at Bierkraft this Thursday.  The full list has yet to be released but we expect it to be pretty refreshingly gnarly.  Jersey totally just jumped Staten Island in the rankings.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Saturday, May 21 - Sixpoint Brewery and Tacos El Bronco @ Sycamore, Brooklyn:

Alright, I know we've made several claims regarding the best food to eat while consuming craft brew, but it's been decided:  Tacos.  The famed Brooklyn taco truck - Tacos El Bronco (as in served from a Ford Bronco) will be making a point to prove their case when it comes to food/beer pairing.  They will be bringing the best tacos in Brooklyn out to Sycamore and Sixpoint Craft Ales will be pouring their namesake and seasonal brews.  I can't think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  Literally.  Top of the "Ways to Spend a Saturday Afternoon List."

Sycamore is located at 1118 Cortelyou Road between Westminster Road and East 11th Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Friday, May 20 - Sunday, May 22 - Maine Beer Weekend @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

Maine is the unsung hero of East Coast craft beer.  One of the least populated states on the east coast with most of the population hugging the Atlantic Maine's craft beer is full of fisherman culture and grit.  Malty, full-bodied brews that shine nicely in the noon-day sun next to a pile of steamers on the beach.  IPA's that are hopped to the teeth that pair perfectly with the days deep-water catch.  Stouts that are roasted to perfection packed to the gills with body that a master of the ocean would consume during a rugged winter night filled with crab fishing.

The Pony Bar shares our sentimental views of Maine, seafood and beer and they are throwing the 3rd Annual Maine Beer Weekend.  Belgian brews straight from Allagash, fishermen's straight from Shipyard and Seadog and malty, woodsy brews from Geary's will fill the draught board and the cask lines.  Fresh seafood shipped in straight from Maine will be cooked up by the gastropub culinary geniuses behind Pony's usual menu - we're talking lobster rolls, scallop sliders and fried oysters.

There's even a hint that some super-special brews will be on tap but cannot be mentioned due to legal reasons.

I like that.  A lot.

See you this weekend!

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue on the Northwest Corner of 45th Street, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan.

Liveblog Rogue Oyster Night at Blind Tiger

Brad

Good Morning Beer Friends Nation! Welcome to Rogue’s Pacific Northwest Beer & Oyster Fest Liveblog: Hangover Edition.

Were you following along last night and finding yourself confused as to what beer we were talking about, or what a "good Peter taste" was? (nice one Phil...)

Well, good news for you, here is the sober edit of drunken iPhone blogging.  Read up and see what The Beer Friends enjoyed last night.  Also, do not miss out on your chance to try some of these tasty brews, this event goes through tonight.  So find your way down to Blind Tiger today and Northwest beers and oysters.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

We have patiently waited all year, and it's finally here - Rogue's Pacific Northwest & Oyster Fest at Blind Tiger! This is an amazing event - worth every oyster shooter and brew to wash em' down!

Phil's 1st - Dry Hopped Mogul Madness: A good standard hoppy ale with a bit of malty goodness to round out the bunches of hops at the beginning. I don't get too much of the specific nuts and mocha thats supposed to be at the tail end, but that doesn't detract. Nothing too spectacular but it's definitely a good one to start the evening off with.

Brad's 1st - Love and Hoppiness is a fantastic German Pilsner. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of typical pilsners but found that German pilsners are heavier and I like that - this German style pilsner is heavy AND hoppy! Fantastic!

Graham's 1st - Northwestern Ale: Red pine trees instead of green, infused with citrus sap are the thoughts that accompany the first sip of this beer.  The red gives a slightly fruity bread taste to the malt feel and the hops add a front row of piney citrus notes as they pass over the taste buds.  It goes by quick, leaving a little blood orange bitterness in the aftermath, which contributes strongly towards not wasting any time getting to the enjoyment of the next sip.

Paul's 1st - Chipotle Ale:  Starting with this beer and a plate of oysters was a great idea.  It's a nice deep amber ale with a great kick at the end, I really am enjoying this beer.  The chipotle flavor lingers and I love it.  If you don't like a lingering a lingering hot flavor then maybe you should steer yourself in another direction; but if you can handle a bit of that flavor, this beer is worth a go.  Also, the hot spice in this beer leads perfectly to the beer I am going to next...

Susan Gallo (guest post!) 1st - Even though Graham already posted on it, I'm going to comment on Northwestern Ale. The Northwestern was balanced well with a malty resonance on the first sip. The sweet citrus aftertaste was a tad overpowering, but the second taste proved delightful. The perfect brew for an after work pick-me-up.

Phil's 2nd - Double Mocha Porter: it's good. A great porter taste with a good coffee finale that doesn't disappoint. The only thing missing that I can think of is the chocolate. As far as mocha goes this is a little too overpowering with the coffee, so Michael so that the Jo plate is lost on the bitterness of the end, bit it still holds it's own as a second round.

Paul's 2nd - I2PA - A very nice Double IPA. It tastes lighter than a double IPA should. This beer is, dare I say, "dangerously drinkable." It has a lot of hop flavor but it goes down smooth. Doesn't have the trademark punch double IPA's have, but has the ABV that backs it up.

Brad 2nd - Dad's Little Helper Black IPA - another great pour from Rogue. Surprising head for a IPA (thought I got a stout instead) but it was smooth and had a IPA bite. A interesting mixture between the black and IPA - if that makes any sense...

Graham's 2nd - Dad's Little Helper Black IPA - Easily drinkable roasted malt flavor that sticks with you past the hoppy herbal bitterness.  Goes down with a smooth carbonation and leaves you feeling heartily refreshed.

Brad's 3rd - John John Dead Guy is the Dead Guy Pale Ale aged in Whiskey barrels- This is a little watery and in all honesty I'm on a bourbon kick.  This is good but, if it were bourbon, I would have liked so much more...

Susan Gallo 2nd - I'm not one for hoppy beers, but the Dry-hopped Mogul Madness is fantastic. The menu notes it has seven types of hops, however the nutty finish rounds out the bitterness. The perfect choice for a second beer.

Phil's 3rd - Hazlenut Brown: As a family member of the hazelnut growing community I have to give homage to my grandfather who's hazelnuts very well might be in the beer I'm droning right now. Always a favorite, it brings across the nutty essence of the hazelnut. Well balanced it's a great way to round out the evening.

Graham's 3rd - XS Imperial Pilsner: Light as a pilsner, hoppy like a rabbit.  Or a mildly hopped pale ale.  Minus the malt body but including the malt flavor.  This one is refreshingly easy to drink on the hottest of summer days without sacrificing a flavor profile worthy of a deliciously herbal hop nugget.

Graham also tried Brutal Bitter and Mogul Madness but for some reason lacked the words to describe either, but thoroughly enjoyed both.  However, Kristina (another guest!) mentioned that she detected a hint of jelly beans on the nose of the Brutal Bitter.  Interesting...

Also, while we only wrote about the beers, the Yaquina Bay oysters were tops as well.

Great night, thanks to Rogue for bringing the brews and the oysters, and thanks to Blind Tiger for hosting.  The Beer Friends will continue to now sit back and wait for this event to come around next  year...

Rogue Night at the Blind Tiger

Brad

Hola!  Beer Friends here and instead of doing the stereotypical Cinco de Mayo celebratory thing - the Beer Friends did Rogue beer and Oysters!  While enjoying the beautiful summer-like weather, we enjoyed the wide variety of pulls offered at Blind Tiger on Bleecker St. and had a few rounds of Yakima Bay Oysters.  Viva la Oregon!  Viva la Rogue!  Here is a sampling of the night: Brad 1st - Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout on nitro... This was easy... Shakespeare? Nitro? Being a English major in undergrad AND a nitro pour it was a done deal.  Well worth it.  Smooth and delicious even as the weather heats up... From now on I'm getting a nitro pour no matter the time of season.

Graham 1st - An IRA is more than just a rebel army in Ireland...it's also the style of Rogue's Sig's N' Western: India RED Ale!   Red, smooth, malty and HOPPY; it is a deliciously flavorful brew.

Phil 1st - Captain Sig's N'Western Ale is an excellent way to start off the evening, on a light citrus and hoppy note, balanced by a subtle malty finish, I could drink this any time.  India Red Ale is fantastic!

Brad 2nd- Brutal IPA - very tasty, not as hoppy as a Sixpoint Bengali Tiger but enjoyable... Tasty with the oyster shooters.

Graham 2nd - Eugene City 200 Meter.  Golden orange IPA. Just enough citrus with an aromatic touch of flavor.  I'd drink two if there weren't more Rogue to drink.

Phil 2nd - Eugene City 200 meter was great!  Very floral and almost fruity at the forefront, with a very clean finish, take this for your summer choice if you can find it.

Brad 3rd - American Amber - this is almost a perfect Amber beer, smooth and easy on the palette.  A nice end to the night... for Brad.

Graham 3rd - Latona is specially made with a new hop variety and some cool aromatic malts.  Solid malt and hop flavors seem to be the story for the night with Rogue and this one really follows in suit.

Phil 3rd - Chipotle Ale is the way to go if you like BBQ.   Smoky flavor with just the tiniest hint of a bite that really helps to accentuate the spices of anything you would be eating with this beer.

Graham 4th - Mogul is malt madness. end of story.  Smooth with hops, fits with the m.o. of the night.

Phil 4th - Dry Hopped Saint Rouge Red.  I  couldn't have picked a better beer to finish the night with.  A good malty beginning with a hint of hops for the middle, ending with a slightly malty aftertaste that rolls into a citrus.  If you're looking for a closer I would recommend this.
