New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 17

Graham

Hello all you Beer Friends out there!  I'm sure by now you have all heard that Nebraska Brunette Nut Brown is the 2011 Beer Friends Final Four Champion! Congratulations Nebraska!  It was an amazing tournament this year but if you're anything like me then you've been wandering around aimlessly, trying to find something to fill the void now that it's over.  I have just the thing for you:  Sours, Kegs n Eggs, Evil Twins, Breakfast Stouts from Kentucky and a Cask Beer Festival in Brooklyn. I think that should do the trick...

Tuesday, April 19 - $10 Tuesday Tastings 'April Sours' @ Jimmy's No. 43, Manhattan:

April Sours bring May Flowers?  I think so, but you won't have to wait until may to get those flowers.  Jimmy's No. 43 is offering a selection of sours to sample this Tuesday night as part of their weekly $10 Tuesday Tastings series.  Sours are a very intriguing beer to sample, so there will also be beer experts on hand to walk you through their brewing process and what to look for while drinking them.  Also, how to properly conceal the pucker your face is trying to make so you don't look like a beer wuss in front of all your friends.

Jimmy's No. 43 is located at 43 East 7th Street (downstairs) between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, East Village, Manhattan.

Tuesday, April 19 - Kegs and Eggs with Smuttynose/Lagunitas @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan:

Are you looking for something to do Tuesday morning? Say around 8 AM-ish?  Well it's Spring Break and if you're like any adult who's been working for this long it doesn't matter if it's vacation, you're still up at the crack of dawn because the 'man' now has your lazy soul.  Well, sleeping late may be a forgotten experience, but you can still stick it to the man by waking up and mixing your scrambled egg's with some craft beer at the Spring Lounge in NoLita.

Smuttynose and Lagunitas are teaming up to bring you breakfast with a craft beer bang.  Expect eggs, potatoes, bacon, biscuits, gravy and $1 off any Lagunitas or Smuttynose draughts!  The list is TBA at the moment, but we all know that any Lagunitas and Smuttynose brew pairs deliciously with breakfast.  Don't try to hide it.

See you before work at the Spring Lounge, located at 48 Spring Street on the SW corner of Mulberry, NoLita, Manhattan.

Wednesday, April 20 - Weyerbacher Night @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan:

Weyerbacher is one of those breweries that when you hear their name you're think:  I love those guys! - Almost immediately.  It might take you a minute or two to remember what brews back up those emotions, but it doesn't matter.  Weyerbacher = Awesome.  It's in the dictionary. That's what kind of a staple they are in the craft beer world.  They are also headed to Rattle n' Hum on Wednesday with a booming list of reasons why the name Weyerbacher is synonymous with American craft beer.  Check it out:

On cask: Double Simcoe Hops Infusion Quad Old Heathen Verboten (BPA, not available in NY) Papa (Brewers select series, style TBA)

On tap: Blithering Idiot Merry Monks Quad Insanity Heresy Double Simcoe Hops Infusion Slam Dunkel Lima Tiny Tiny 12 13 14 15 Old Heathen IPA project 1 Quatro Crazy Fireside Pumpkin Blanche

Boom goes the Weyerbacher.

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Wednesday, April 20 - Evil Twin and Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n' Hum:

Every person has an Evil Twin somewhere out there.  The Beer Friends have The Wine Friends, Rattle n' Hum has Off the Wagon, Paul (of the Beer Friends) actually has something like 12 evil twins (seriously, he's set a world record for dopplegangers) and Boulder Brewery has...the Evil Twin Brewery from Denmark.

Not really.  Boulder Brewery, a famed American craft brewery, is helping to welcome Evil Twin to the United States as they tour our great land sharing their best Danish craft beer.  I'm sure it won't taste very evil.  Check out the line-up for both breweries below:

Evil Twin Brews: Before, During, & After Xmas – 8% - Double IPA Soft DK (Soft Dookie) – 10% Imperial Vanilla Stout Disco Beer – 10.5% Imperial IPA/Chardonnay blend Yin – 10% Imperial Stout Yang – 10% Imperial IPA

It's suggested you make a pretty badass Black & Tan out of the Yin & Yang.

The EXTREMELY Impressive Boulder Beer List:

Hazed and Infused, Mojo, Sweaty Betty, Buffalo Gold, Planet Porter, Singletrack, Flashback India Brown Ale, 2010 Killer Penguin, Mojo Risin', Nitro Obovoid, Never Summer, 2010 Obovoid, Oak Aged American Red, Chocolate Porter, Nitro Mojo Risin' and 2009 Killer Penguin and Apricot Mojo.

Still not impressed?  Let's age some of those in Bourbon Barrel's for ya':

Bourbon Barrel Aged - Singletrack, Vanilla Porter, Obovoid, Never Summer and Spiced Never Summer.

If you still aren't impressed then just don't show up.  Stay home actually.  Forget about craft beer and start drinking more water.

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Thursday, April 21 - Founders Beer Festival @ Standings, Manhattan:

Founders Brewery has quickly become one of the most sought after craft breweries in America.  They've done this by producing creative, quality and over-the-top flavorful brews that are also extremely drinkable.  Some of their most famous and desired brews will be pouring this Thursday at Standings (right above Jimmy's No. 43) in the East Village.

Founders Draft List:

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (yes, it's true, it will really be there!), Red's Rye Pale Ale, Pale Ale, Cerise, Double Trouble Imperial IPA.

And as usual, FREE pizza at 8 pm.

Standings is located at 43 East 7th Street (upstairs) between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, East Village, Manhattan.

Friday, April 22 - Sunday, April 24 - 5th Annual Williamsburg Cask Festival @ dba Brooklyn, Brooklyn:

dba Brooklyn alongside NYC craft beer guru Alex Hall of Gotham-Imbiber are hosting the 5th Annual Williamsburg Cask Beer festival this year is promising to be better than ever.  They are keeping the draft list secret for now but the Beer Friends will be working hard to bring you some top secret info, or at least spawn some great rumors about what will be pouring.

Here's what we do know:

- 16-18 rare and delicious casks tapped simultaneously.

Sounds pretty enticing to me.

dba Brooklyn is located at 113 North 7th Street between Berry Street and Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Saturday, April 23 - Troeg's Can Only Give You Everything @ GRAB Specialty Foods, Brooklyn:

We're resurrecting an old favorite of the Beer Friends here - the Saturday Tasting Series at GRAB Specialty Foods in Brooklyn.  This week they'll be featuring Troeg's Brewery out of Pennsylvania who promises to be bringing you everything they've got.  Expect free tastes of Troegenator, Sunshine Pils, Hopback Amber and Java Head Stout.

While you're there hit up the GRAB Specialty Foods Beer Store with your growler in hand and bring home a growler from one of their 10 draft lines.

GRAB Specialty Foods is located at 438 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

The Beer Friends are curious...What was your craft brew of choice for the Big Game?  Yes that's right, the biggest sporting event of the year.  And no we're not talking about the Superbowl.  We're talking about Chris Paul's 3rd Annual PBA Celebrity Invitational.  That's right, the biggest sports superstars (Chris Paul, Reggie Bush), recording artists (Nelly, Lil' Wayne) and PBA atheletes (PBA = Professional Bowling Association = You wouldn't recognize their names if I told you).  Seriously though - What'd you drink for it?  I think a good Smokey Stout really brings out the bowling ball black flavor.  Although, going with a Belgian White Ale, maybe from Allagash, really brings out the 7-10 split.  Either way, we enjoyed the big game and hope you did too.  Let's see what we have this week to celebrate your own bowling victory's - finally breaking 100-points. Tuesday, February 8th - Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan:

Boulder Brewery was one of the Beer Friends favorite stops on our Colorado Brewery Tour and this Tuesday they'll be stopping in our town, at Rattle n' Hum, with their best selection of craft brews.  The list of brews is still hidden to the public but we can only imagine that it will include our favorites Mojo IPA, Sweaty Betty Blonde, Planet Porter and Cold Hop and we can only HOPE that they will bring some Killer Penguin and Never Summer Ale.  We also hope they pull the same move they did when we visited the brewery - 4 oz. tasting pours of all 15 of their brews that pour regularly for $13.  Let's quickly do the math in our head on this one... 4 oz. X 15 = 60 oz.  That's roughly 4.5 brews.  Will this happen in NYC on Tuesday?  Beer Gods, we hope so.

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 E 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues.

Wednesday, February 9th - East Coast vs. West Coast Punk Rock Night @ Mission Dolores, Brooklyn:

And you thought the punk rock festival was over.  Nope.  The anti-everything-except-craft-beer-and-punk-rock-music-revolution continues out in Park Slope, Brooklyn on Wednesday.  East Coast (Smuttynose and Victory) will be battling West Coast (Lagunitas and Ballast Point) with four of their best pours - IPA, Imperial IPA, a Dark and a Wild Card.  Each brewery will also be bringing their best Punk Rock music mix.  In the music competition it's hard to pick a favorite coast - do we go Dropkick Murphy's and Bouncing Souls or Rancid and NOFX?  Hard choice.  Equally hard choice?  The beer.  Smutty IPA and Victory Prima Pils or Hop Stoopid and Sculpin IPA?  The smart answer?  Have it all - music and beer.

Mission Dolores is located at 249 4th Avenue between Presidents and Carroll Streets.

Wednesday, February 9th - Brewery Ommegang Night @ The Blind Tiger Ale House, Manhattan:

The Blind Tiger has started a new Wednesday Brewery Night where every Wednesday they feature select drafts from their favorite breweries.  This Wednesday night they will be featuring the work from Phil Leinhart and the Brewery Ommegang.  Ommegang hails from upstate New York where they brew their Belgian style ales out of their farmhouse castle outside of Cooperstown.  Some of their most popular beers include their Witte, Rare Vos, Hennepin, Abbey Ale and the world famous Three Philosophers.  Maybe they'll even pour some Chocolate Indulgence.  Holler New York Beglian!

The Blind Tiger Ale House is located at 281 Bleecker Street between Jones Street and 7th Avenue.

Thursday, February 10th - Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Night @ The Stirling Hotel, New Jersey:

It happens to the best of us beer bloggers, you eventually have to expand your market.  We've hit Westchester and north, we've hit Staten Island, we've even plugged craft breweries out on Long Island.  Well, today, Jersey eat your heart out.  This Thursday, in Stirling, New Jersey, their local hotel of the same name will be celebrating one of our favorite breweries 30th Anniversary - Sierra Nevada.  Maybe it's the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Chili I made for the Superbowl that brought this on, or maybe I secretly harbor a love for New Jersey (you decide which is more likely), but the Beer Friends think you should take the NJ Path out to Stirling and check out this event.  They will have ALL FOUR of the Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Brews on tap as well as some other Sierra surprises.  We think that it's time to offer some peace negotiations to Jersey.  You serve craft beer with an event like this, we come out and visit you.  Seems like a good deal.

The Stirling Hotel is located in New Jersey.  I know nothing about the state except for that.  Good luck getting there.

Just kidding!  It's really located at 227 Main Ave Stirling, New Jersey.  Which is literally around the corner from the NJ Transit Stirling Stop.  Seriously, it's wicked close.  Check it out here: Jersey Isn't That Far Away!

Jersey huh?  The Beer Friends are always willing to take it to strange, new places.  Next stop...who knows...maybe South Jersey!

Featured Brewery: Boulder Beer Company

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Boulder Beer Company Logo30 minutes Northwest of Denver lies the liberal central of Colorado, Boulder.  Home to University of Colorado, the majestic Flatirons, and Boulder Beer Company.  Boulder Beer Company is Colorado's First Microbrewery, which is pretty impressive given the number of breweries in Colorado.  The Beer Friends traveled to Boulder on their recent Colorado Brewery Trip on route to beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheater and had a few samples.  Are are a few highlights:

Cold Hop was fantastic out (t)here.  We can find this beer in NYC and really enjoy it, but always think it can be a little something more.  Direct from the brewery was fantastic.

Boulder Beer Company Logo

Mojo IPA is a good beer, but having it on the sampler platter close to the Mojo Risin Double IPA is unkind and unfortunate for regular Mojo.  Mojo Risin is everything us "hopheads" want out of a beer - drinkable and hoppy - but not over spiced.  Mojo is a good introduction IPA for people and Mojo Risin is a good IPA for us veteran drinkers out there.

Obovoid Stout is a delicious stout by any means.  This is creamy enough to have hints of a milk stout but is a oak-aged Oatmeal Stout instead.  Always a delicious pour and a excellent beer for the upcoming fall and winter seasons.

The Boulder Beer Company is located at: 2880 Wilderness Place, Boulder, CO 80301 [googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=2880+Wilderness+Place+Boulder,+Colorado+80301&sll=40.028863,-105.247993&sspn=0.036082,0.083342&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=2880+Wilderness+Pl,+Boulder,+Colorado+80301&ll=40.026678,-105.247982&spn=0.009021,0.020835&z=14&iwloc=A&output=embed&w=425&h=350]

The tasting Room is open:

11a - 9p Monday through Friday
