New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of May 13, 2012

Graham

Tuesday, May 15 - Pony Bar Upper East Side Grand Opening @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan: The Upper East Side just got way cooler - the genius minds behind The Pony Bar decided that the city needed more craft beer and delicious food and lucky UES-craft-beer-heads are getting the second installation.  It's been described as the second mecca of craft beer in NYC (after the first Pony of course).  The new spot will be a bit bigger in size and is keeping with the same 20 taps/2 casks system.  Of course everything will be $5 - an exceptionally reasonable price for some of the craft staples and specialty pours of which they always seem to have several on hand.  On top of all that good stuff they will be keeping with the great food, music and rustic Americana atmosphere, all to provide you with arguably the best craft beer drinking experience in the city.

The UES Pony Bar is located at 1444 1st Ave on the corner of 75th St. in the Upper East Side, Manhattan

Tuesday, May 15 - Wednesday, May 16 - Pacific Northwest Beer and Oyster Festival @ The Blind Tiger, Manhattan:

Beer and oysters.  A magical pairing.  No two things go together finer.  Oh, now what's that you say?  There's a festival devoted to it happening this Tuesday and Wednesday?  At the Blind Tiger Ale House? Well now, looks like my week is shot.  Going to have to attend of course.  Yes, both nights, obviously.  Oh and all the beer and oysters are from the Pacific Northwest?  You didn't have to do that, pulling out all the stops to provide me, your average beer drinker, with the best oysters and beer in the country.  Really, it means a lot to me.

The Blind Tiger Ale House is located at 281 Bleecker St on the corner of Jones St. in the West Village, Manhattan

Thursday, May 17 - Long Island Week Draft Event @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Long Island has sure solidified it's position recently in the East Coast craft beer world.  They went from having one or two to having a half dozen craft breweries in less than a three year period.  And, unlike many products (people) from Long Island, they've shed the Strong Island stereotype, producing some of the best beers in this part of the world.  Join Bierkraft for a night of Long Island beer appreciation with the likes of Greenpoint Harbor, Blue Point, Barrier, Southampton and more.

Bierkraft is located at 191 Fifth Ave between Union St and Berkeley Place in Park Slope, Brooklyn

Friday, May 18 - 4th Annual Maine Event @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

As if this week wasn't already totally mind blowingly exciting for the Pony Bar - their Hell's Kitchen location will be throwing their 4th Annual Maine Beer and Food Event.  That's right, a weekend where the Pony brings you to the shores, mountains and forests of the northeast's most rugged wilderness: Maine. Think Shipyard, Allagash, Sea Dog, Sebago, Baxter, Marshall Wharf and Belfast Bay paired alongside scallop sliders, lobster rolls and baskets of fried oysters.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Ave on the corner of 45th Street in Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan

Beer Review 60: Blue Point Hoptical Illusion

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! This week the Beer Friends head back out to Billy Joel's native land, Long Island for Blue Point's Hoptical Illusion.  This is the third beer the Beer Friends have reviewed (Spring Fling and Supreme Pumpkin) but the first you can get year round from Blue Point Brewing.  We had a great time at the Brew House (I mean who doesn't have a great time at a brewery?) Check out Hoptical Illusion for a nice year round hop flavor!  Beer!  Islands!  Year Round flavor!

Beer Review 36: Blue Point Supreme Pumpkin and Fire Island Pumpkin Barrel Ale

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Happy October 25th!(?) Today the Beer Friends explore a newer fad within the beer community - Pumpkin Ales.  Available in the fall season, these beers give a alternative to the traditional Octoberfest beers available inbetween Summer and Winter.  We reviewed Blue Point Supreme Pumpkin Ale and Fire Island Pumpkin Barrel Ale to see which was better and why.  This is a battle between two New York City area beers, and the Beer Friends have visited Blue Point Brewery but have yet to check out Fire Island Brewery.  Pumpkin + Beer!  = Pumpkin Beer!

Craft Beer Week Continues - Events for the Week of 9/27-10/2

Graham

I don't know how you all felt about the 'opening ceremonies' of New York City Craft Beer Week but over here at the Beer Friends we thought it was just fantastic. Ithaca had some tasty brews pouring over at the Pony Bar, the Get Real NY Cask and Food festival was for real with 80+ casks pouring and 20+ local restaurants serving up their best samples, the Staten Island beer festival had some of the Beer Friends favorite breweries on hand and saying the Atlantic Antic was antic would be an understatement. You'll be hearing more about these events as Craft Beer Week sprints along, but for now let's see what we have coming to us in the week ahead. Monday, September 27 - Kelso of Brooklyn @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan: Need a good reason to head over to Rattle n' Hum on a Monday night? Well, no, any reason should do, it's one of the city's finest beer bars. However, if you did feel like you needed a reason then this would be it. Kelso of Brooklyn will be bringing their best tonight at RnH. Head over and grab their IPA, it's one of my favorites.

Tuesday, September 28 - Kelso of Brooklyn and Sausage Pairing @ Jimmy's No. 43, Manhattan: What!? More Kelso! Woo! And sausage! Have some more Kelso, maybe the pilsner this time, paired with some sausage at Jimmy's No. 43's weekly beer tastings with seasoned beer experts. This week they'll be pairing Kelso's brews with sausages. Oktoberfest celebration anyone?

Tuesday, September 28 - L'Asso and Sixpoint Brewery Pairings Dinner @ L'Asso Pizza: I knew these two things would eventually find each other and life would then be closer to reaching perfection. Eat some of the city's finest pizza on the Lower East Side at L'Asso and drink some of it's finest beer alongside your slices. I knew there was nothing wrong with my weekly Tuesday Sixpoint Growler and Pizza Night on the couch.

Wednesday, September 29 - Stone Brewing Co. @ Sunswick 35/35 , Queens: Love me some Stone brews! I love em' enough to head all the way out to Queens even. Sunswick 35/35 is Queens shining beer bar and proof that you don't have to settle for drinking German beers in someone's backyard. It's not that bad of a train ride from Manhattan either, you even get panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. And let's not forget the beer either.

Thursday, September 30 - Left Hand Night @ The Double Windsor, Brooklyn: Let's keep the love up for the outer boroughs (they love craft beer as much as any Manhattanite!). Head to Park Slope for a night with one of Colorado's finest breweries. One of the Beer Friends favorite stops in Co., savor up some Milk Stout, Polestar Pilsner and some Sawtooth. Make sure you grab a few extra before you leave though, you know, to keep yourself going on that extended train ride home.

Friday, October 1 - Smuttynose and Ballast Point @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan: Rattle n' Hum is offering you a twofer of an event this Friday. Head on over after work to grab delicious pints of Smuttynose and Ballast Point. I'd suggest going for the Smutty's Big A IPA and Ballast's Big EYE IPA. Don't get them confused though, or do get them confused and go back for a second round of each just to be sure.

Friday, October 1 - Empire Brewing Co. Night @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan: They don't call it the Empire State for nothin' and the same goes for Empire Brewing Co. Some of upstate New York's best beer flows from Empire, situated in Syracuse, NY. I say go for the Cream Ale. The Pony pours it on a nitro tap which leaves you with a super smooth and super creamy refreshing beverage. Also, it's at the Pony Bar. Who doesn't love the Pony Bar? It's definitely the Beer Friends favorite.

Saturday, October 2 - Boulder, Riverhorse and Blue Point @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan: So maybe the good folks at Rattle n' Hum like Craft Beer Week a little bit. Maybe they were instrumental in its creation. Or maybe they are just solidly awesome at what they do. As if two breweries at a time weren't pushing the scientific limits of craft brew domination, try three! They are bringing Blue Point from Long Island, Riverhorse from Jersey and Boulder all the way from Colorado (The Beer Friends sure stopped in on our 2010 Colorado Brew Tour). Diversity in life is such a great thing.

All right you Craft Beer lovers out there, time to head off and enjoy what the rest of NYC Craft Beer Week has to offer. Remember, this list here is just a selection of the Beer Friends favorite events over the next week. To get the whole event listing (of which there are hundreds) shoot on over to the NYC Craft Beer Week website. Don't forget to keep checking in on where the Beer Friends end up this week by following TheBeerFriends on both Facebook and Twitter. See you at the bar!
