Hashtag Battles Week Sixteen!

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#greenflash) vs (#founders), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We're starting on Saturday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Sixteen: San Diego Chargers (#greenflash) vs Detroit Lions(#founders)

The San -D- iego Super-Char-gers are up to their usual tricks.  Firing on all cylinders towards the end of the season which typically meant a playoff push... however, this year they struggled with a 6 game losing streak and now Norv and the boys might be outside looking in.  This means big changes for the Southern California team with rumors surfacing about Norv losing his job.  There is a light at the end of the tunnel, much like the aligning of the planets for Mayan culture, the Chargers are still alive if certain teams fall (Broncos and Raiders) and the Chargers win out (vs Detroit and Oakland), they'll be right back in - and look dangerous as ever.  Green Flash is a excellent brewery out of California and just happened to have visited The Pony Bar on thursday night.  With delicious pours like Plead the Fifth and 30th Street Pale Ale (one of my new favorites), Green Flash is strong throughout the season and always comes enjoyable.

The Detroit Lions have had a roller coaster season.  Up at the beginning, then HandshakeGate, then the personal foul implosion but now they can secure a playoff spot today against the very difficult San Diego Chargers.  They don't make things easy.  However, Matt Stafford is still throwing for yards and Megatron is still catching everything so you can never count them out (right Oakland?).  If the Lions pull this one out - the playoff scene changes dramatically in the AFC and NFC, but if the Chargers win the scene stays the same with the Lions trying to get into the playoffs next week versus Green Bay - go luck with that.  Founders is an amazing company with fantastic beers, seriously - I'm in love (I one time introduced a six-pack to my mother... that was awkward).  Once you've tried one of their delicious brews you'll be in love too.  Founders Brewing is somewhat young on the scene, and keeping a clean record (no personal fouls for smashing other beer bottles) - maybe they could help the young Lions along to a win in this weeks hashtag battle!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of October 23, 2011

Tuesday, October 25 - Southern Tier Night @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan: Here's an event you won't want to miss:  Southern Tier's first brewery event at the Pony Bar.  They'll be bringing the best, the biggest and the rarest of their brews.  We're talking hoppy oak age Imperial IPA's, Phin and Matt's Extraordinary Ale and some high alcohol, rare bottles that will be mysteriously popping up around the bar.  If you're lucky one might pop up next to you.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue on the Northwest Corner of West 45th Street, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan.

Tuesday, October 25 - Tuesday Night Tasting with Empire Brewery @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Now here's an interesting beer story - breweries that start in large cities usually export their production to smaller towns in the region in order to produce enough volume to satisfy consumers while not having to pay the immense inner-city rents - Brooklyn Brewery, Sam Adams and Harpoon all have done this among countless other craft brewers.  Empire is a bit different - started in Syracuse, New York way way back, got pretty popular in the region and then opened a second brewery in order to keep up - in Brooklyn.

Both the Syracuse brewery and the Brooklyn based brewery will be helping to support their more popular offerings, while at the same time focusing on their own featured brews.  Assistant brewer Olivia Cerio and brand manager Gabe Barry will be leading the tastings and will feature beers made exclusively at both breweries.  The pours listed so far are - Amber Ale, IPA, Pumpkin, Hefe and Hop Harvest.  Tuesday night tastings are free - but Bierkraft isn't too big - so get there early.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Wednesday, October 26 - Beers of San Diego! @ The Stag's Head, Manhattan:

This Beer Friend has some fond memories of San Diego Breweries after the Southern California Brewery tour stopped there in July.  Now he gets to relive them at the Stag's Head = less palm trees and perfectly sunny weather, but the same great beer.  I'll take that.

Mission Brewery will be on hand alongside Ballast Point, Stone Brewing and Green Flash Brewing.  If San Diego had a brewing all-star team, this would be it.

The Stag's Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Upper East Side, Manhattan.

Thursday, October 27 - I Love New York Beer Month - A Tale of Two Forks @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan:

October at the Spring Lounge is a special time.  Especially for us Empire Staters. For the entire month they've turned over their taps and bottles to the famous craft breweries located here in New York.  As sort of a finale they'll be showcasing two of Long Islands best breweries, Greenport Harbor and Southampton, in an event titled "Strong Ryeland" - which features a rye brew of epic proportions of the same name.  Think of a rye based ESB with, and I quote the Spring Lounge - "enough hops to make your toes tingle."

The Spring Lounge is located at 48 Spring Street on the Corner of Mulberry Street, NoLita, Manahttan.
