New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of August 26th - September 1st

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Another week, another week of beer events... check it!

Monday August 27th -

In the craft beer world movement to get local, we find Rockaway Brewing Company , a company so local they deliver their kegs via bicycle!  This brewery pairs up with Jimmy's No. 43 and  Queens County Farm Museum to provide a small tasting where you can try this 2 barrel microbrewery and find out a little more about the Queens County Farm Museum in a fun filled evening of food pairing and local drinking.

Jimmy's No. 43 is located at 43 E 7th St., New York, NY

Tuesday August 28th -

Sticking with the local breweries theme, Kelso of Brooklyn (click here for location, new website for Kelso coming soon) is serving up suds at The Brazen Head in Brooklyn.  Kelso brews are 4 dollars from 6pm to 8pm so plan accordingly.  Beers being served are:

Kelso Saison Kelso Cabernet Barrel Aged IPA Kelso Pilsner Kelso Industrial IPA Kelso Nut Brown

The Brazen Head is located at 228 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY

Wednesday August 29th -

While Idle Hands Bar is doing its wonderful $10 Tastings with Harpoon Brewery (including a full pour of UFO Pumpkin), across the island of Manhattan The Blind Tiger is hosting Great Divide Brewing Company with delicious pours including: a few Yeti's (Chocolate Oak-Aged, 2011 Belgian, and Cask Oak-Aged) and a personal favorite - Smoked Baltic Porter.  Be sure to get there early because the Blind Tiger Ale House always fills up quickly.

Idle Hands Bar is located at 25 Avenue B

Blind Tiger Ale House is located at 281 Bleecker Street

Thursday August 30th -

The Growler Station jumped on the Beer Friends radar in a big way.  Excellent pours, great bottle section and a very knowledgable staff (they even have a cool website!) all makes for a great beer hangout.  On Thursday they prove their awesome-ness by hosting Kelso with special pours of Kellerfest and Imperial Pumpkin (tis the season).

The Growler Station is located at 26 W 8th St.

Friday August 31st -

Take the night off, seriously.  Eat a salad and preserve those calories for tomorrow...

Saturday September 1st -

Pig Island - and this ain't to Lord of the Flies theme park.  Pig Island is in its 3rd Year of serving up all you can eat pork and delicious brews (partly sponsored by Sixpoint).  Honestly this blog can't do justice enough to this great event, you just have to check out the website for more information and to by tickets.

Hashtag Battle Week Twelve!

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#greatdivide vs #ballastpoint), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We're starting on Sunday morning so drink up - support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Twelve: Rematch! Denver Broncos (#greatdivide) vs San Diego Chargers (#ballastpoint)

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable.  Pre-season I thought there was NO WAY we'd be in the hunt for the division title and felt that Tebow would sit most of the year, develop that throwing motion and we'd give it the old college try next year.  How wrong was I (except on the throwing motion part... jeez that's bad).  The Broncos have found their motivation and he sure does love Jesus - everyone seems to  have an opinion on Tebow and even the concept of "play to win the game" is tossed out the window because his mechanics.  Now I'm on a soapbox here and probably shouldn't be speaking for all Bronco fans but... We know he needs help in the throw/accuracy/strength department - we're not idiots, but the team rallies around him and plays their asses off for him - isn't that what you want in a leader?  Someone leading your football team?  Great Divide is always a leader.  Unbelievable brews are the name of their game and they are constantly winning awards and re-developing themselves (check the variations on Yeti Stout).  While one winning is unexplainable (2 for 8?!?!? Really Chiefs?) the other is easily explained... maybe this yin and yang will matchup in harmony to win this weeks Hashtag battle.

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable (Trust me, this is a new paragraph).  Misery loves company and a San Diego loss can be as good as a Denver win on somedays, but this is a new style for San Diego.  Typically slow starters, fast finishers, and out in the first round of the playoffs, the Norv Turner's might not even make the playoffs this year.  Typical all-star Philip Rivers can't connect with his receivers when it counts (but has awesome garbage time numbers) and the special teams are at it again this year-fumbling the game away.  Apparently the typically soft AFC West isn't gonna take it and there will be a fight for the right to be knocked out in the first round this year.  Ballast Point is another themed brewery out of San Diego, but -trust me- order a Black Marlin Porter and you'll start calling all porters Black Marlins.  The Sculpin IPA won gold in 2010 World Beer cup along with a little "brewer of the year" award... you know... no big deal. Perhaps Ballast Point can tutor Rivers in their winning ways and guide San Diego back to the playoffs (although I kinda hope not...).

BFF4 - Brad and Paul Elite 8

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! We've had a few exciting rounds of the Second Annual Beer Friends Final Four (BFF4).  We've seen the favorites go down (New Belgium Fat Tire) and 16 seeds advance (Cigar City Jai Alai).  We've got Stouts fighting it out in the Colorado / Michigan bracket to move on to the final four and a #16 and #7 sleepers fighting it out in Paul's bracket.

Great Divide Yeti Stout [twitter] faces off against Founders Breakfast Stout [twitter] in a deep, dark and powerful matchup.  Both of these brews have been reviewed by the Beer Friends and received very high remarks.  Let's see who has more fans in this imperial stout match up!

[polldaddy poll=4841497]

There has been amazing support throughout this bracket and it has brought us a match up between #16 vs #7.  Cinderella story Cigar City Jai Alai IPA goes up against a very strong opponent in Nebraska Brewing Brunette Nut Brown ale.  It's tough to pick this one, both brews have been getting incredible support and I'm sure either brew would fare well in the Final 4.  However, only one may move on...

Great Divide Tap Room Hello Beer Friends Nation!

A highlight of the Beer Friends Colorado Brewery Trip was Great Divide Brewery in Denver, Colorado.  Great Divide was a great time and well worth the drive and parking in downtown Denver.  PLUS it's within walking distance of a few other breweries and hosts a Denver breweries walking tour (Click here for info).

The Tap Room itself has a very friendly atmosphere.  The bartenders are more than willing to share Great Divide's fantastic brews with you.  You get four free samples when you come in that you will quickly want to follow up with a pint or two of your favorites.  Everyone in the place were regulars, even if they hadn't ever been there before and they all seemed to know each other.  One Beer Friend even randomly ran into a guy from his father's hometown who, through not so many degrees of separation, knew all the same people he did.  Great Divide is a great brewery, the brews great beer and seems to attract a great clientele.

Great Divide has always had a good showing in Beer Competitions, including this Year's GAFB with Colette a saison winning Silver in Category 64: French and Belgian Style Saison.  Past awards include A gold medal in the 1997 GABF (Hibernation Ale) and silver (Denver Pale Ale - DPA), 1998 Silver Medal in World Beer Cup (Hibernation Ale) and Bronze medal (Denver Pale Ale), Gold medal in 1999 GABF (Denver Pale Ale), Bronze medal in 2002 GABF (Denver Pale Ale), 2003 Silver Medal at GABF (Hibernation Ale), 2005 Silver Medal GABF (Yeti Imperial Stout), 2006 Gold Medal (Old Ruffian Barley Wine) and Silver Medal GABF (Hibernation Ale) and Bronze Medal (Denver Pale Ale), 2007 Gold Medal Australian International Beer Awards (Hercules Double IPA), Bronze Medal 2008 GABF (Yeti Imperial Stout) and three Silver Medals in the Australian International Beer Awards (Hercules Double IPA, Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, Titan IPA), Silver Medal at 2009 GABF (Yeti) and two Bronze Medals (Hoss, Old Ruffian) and earlier in 2010 a Bronze medal for Hoss in the World Beer Cup. Wow... impressive!

Brad's Taste:

Hades- good beer, smooth and light, but with a crispness not found in a lot of Belgian Golden Ales.  The ABV on this is high (7.3) but leaves no alcohol taste.

Hoss - This is a complex beer with a lot going on.  Nothing overpowering creates a nice smooth beer, this Rye beer has more flavor than the typical rye flavor.  I can certainly understand why this has won a few awards in the past two years!

Denver Pale Ale (DPA)- This is heavier than the typical Pale Ale.  Full flavor but not as light, I'm really finding a collection of good pale ale's in Colorado (Dale's, Midsummers) but now how do I find them in NYC?

Rumble IPA- Oak aged IPA that is light on hoppiness and heavier on vanilla.  This is a interesting take on a IPA with less focus on the hops and more focus on the flavors that compliment them.

Smoked Baltic Porter- This is a awesome beer.  The smoky blends perfectly with the smoothness of the porter, a lot of flavor and range in a single pint.

Graham's Tastes:

Samurai - I'm not usually a huge golden/blonde ale type of guy, but this one was pretty quality.  Smooth with a golden refreshing flavor that went with the August temperatures outside.

Hercules Double IPA - This Imperial/Double IPA is big and hoppy.  As a self-proclaimed hop-head I fell in love immediately.  After having a sample I order a whole pint of it so I could keep that flavor rolling.

Yeti Imperial Stout - The stickers with the picture of a Yeti that read "Believe" aren't the only great thing about this stout.  It is full of flavor from roasted malts to a tad bit of coffee.  It is smooth and still packs a big stout punch.

The Great Divide Tasting Room is located at 2201 Arapahoe Road, Denver, CO 80205 [googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&q=great+divide+brewing+co&fb=1&gl=us&hq=great+divide+brewing+co&cid=0,0,16728202394686972799&ei=RFeWTI3JIcWclgfOyN2nCg&ved=0CCEQnwIwAQ&hnear=&ll=39.753671,-104.988568&spn=0.006295,0.006295&iwloc=A&output=embed&w=425&h=350]

Beer Review 32: Great Divide Hercules Double IPA

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! This week (in honor of Great American Beer Fest AND our Colorado Brewery trip) we reviewed Great Divide's Hercules Double IPA.  Great Divide is a fantastic brewery founded in 1994 and has made a great name for themselves, first with their Denver Pale Ale and later with their Yeti Stout and Hoss (amongother great beers).  This year, Colette earned a Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival... congrats!

We've really enjoyed everything they've done, and continue to seek out their high quality beers all the way out here on the East Coast.  Beer!

Colorado Brewery Trip 2010 Recap

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! While one Beer Friend held down the fort in NYC, the other three travelled out to the Great (Brewery) State of Colorado for a look around.  Below is a brief recap of the days and breweries we hit.

August 12th -

Garden of the Gods

Phil, James (honorary BF this trip) and Brad arrive in Colorado Springs, quickly finding themselves standing in front of a liquor store cooler inspecting the new and interesting beers in the cooler.  Then a quick run around Garden of the Gods, in North-west Colorado Springs.  Then a drive to Denver to pick up Graham and back home for our first beers of the tour - an extension of Christmas in July/August with a New Belgium 2 Below and Odell's Isolation Ale to kick off the trip (beers remaining from my winter holiday trip home).

August 13th -

A beautiful drive to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park.  After taking some time to find a campsite (be sure to call ahead) we stop at our first brewery, Estes Park Brewery.  This small brewery  stays true to their roots, producing small batches to sell to local stores and supply their pub which is upstairs.  A few highlights were the Trail Ridge Red - also known as the Redrum Ale (playing off the famed Stanley Hotel in Estes Park - inspiration for the Steven King novel "The Shining") and the Estes Park Porter.  Then we headed into Fort Collins to check out Coopersmiths Pub and Brewing and Equinox Brewery a short walk away.  Equinox had a great feel - a bit of a coffee house vibe, it's a bar without any heels and no Coors Light on draft.  We enjoyed their sampler with six offerings - Sunrise Golden Ale, Vernal Hefeweizen, MidSummer Pale Ale, Orbit ESB, Zenith IPA, and the Sunset Stout.  All we very enjoyable but MidSummer Pale Ale was a favorite of these Beer Friends.  From there we headed to a favorite drinking hole - Old Chicago, had a few before returning to the forrest.

Rocky Mountain National Park

August 14th -

After waking up in Roosevelt National Forest, we pack the tents and head to Fort Collins to visit

Odell Brewery

Odell Brewing and New Belgium Brewery.  Odell had some fantastic stuff - including a Cutthroat Porter on Nitro and we played some board games, which turns into a theme this trip.  From Odell's we head to New Belgium to try to get on a tour, but on a Saturday afternoon we had no chance.  We decide to head to Oskar Blues Brewery in Longmont, Colorado before heading down to Denver for a Colorado Rockies game.  Oskar Blues was a great experience in visiting a brewery known for craft beers in cans.  Dale's Pale Ale is always delicious and no different here.

August 15th -

On Sunday we headed down to the Great Sand Dunes National Park.  A beautiful 4.5 hour drive from Colorado Springs, with a visit to San Luis Valley Brewing Company.  This was a very cool brewery built inside of a old bank building, using the thick layered vault as the cooler.  At the campsite we enjoyed some Ska Brewing Company, Breckenridge Brewery and Bridgeport Brewery beers.

Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park

August 16th -

The Beer Friends jumped in the car again and drive through Pike National Forest on route to Denver.  In

Great Divide

Denver we checked out Great Divide Brewery, Breckenridge Brewery Pubhouse, and Wynkoop Brewery before checking out a different Old Chicago which every one has a unique selection of beers on draft.

August 17th -

After a early start we head up through the town of Breckenridge on our way to Mount Evans, home of the highest paved road in America.  After coming off the mountain, we visited Dostal Alley Brewpub in Central City, Colorado before heading to Lefthand Brewing Company in Longmont, Colorado.

Mt Evans

August 18th -

After a tearful goodbye to Phil, Brad and Graham head up to Fort Collins again for their scheduled tour of

New Belgium Brewery

New Belgium.  Before New Belgium we stopped at Fort Collins Brewery which was moving into a beautiful new facility, but alas not open for business.  Right down the road was ODell Brewery and we stopped in for another taste and tour, including exciting news of Odell's shipping beer to England starting in September!  Lucky Brits!  After a long and very informative tour of New Belgium (including four different beer tastings!) we stop in to Equinox Brewery for a game of Candyland, and - since we were there - a beer.  Then into Rocky Mountain Nat'l Park for another night under the stars.

August 19th -

Tents packed and campsite cleaned, the Beer Friends head down to Boulder with a quick stop off in Lyons to check out the original Oskar Blues location.  Once in Boulder we head to the Boulder Brewing Company and then to Avery Brewing Company - with highlights of Cold Hop (at Boulder Brewing) and Out of Bounds Stout small batch with a coffee kick.  Then we drove and wondered around Red Rocks and Garden of the Gods before heading to our last brewery, Bristol Brewing Company.

Overall an excellent time had by all and look forward to Colorado Breweries becoming our Breweries of the Week!
