New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of March 4, 2012

Graham

Hey now!  It's Tuesday.  Let's drink some craft beer! Tuesday, March 6 - Founders Night @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

Some would call Founders arriving on the East Coast one of the best things to happen to New York City ever.  Perhaps we should have a public holiday to celebrate?  Until then

we'll just have to settle for there amazing beer events - and tonight's is happening at the Pony Bar.

This is Pony's first time with Founders and they're pulling out all the stouts - Breakfast Stouts that is.  The Pony is promising a few varieties of them alongside the rest of Founders big lineup.  The likelihood of disappointed is non-existent.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue on the Northwest corner of 45th Street, Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan.

Tuesday, March 6 - Mikkeller VS Evil Twin @ Bar Great Harry, Brooklyn:

A good ol' fashioned Danish showoff.  If those really exist then there's one tonight at BGH in Carroll Gardens.  They tried to pair brews up that could be comprable in a competition, but that proved rather difficult as both breweries produce beer that is hard to categorize.

Check the list:

Mikkeller I Beat yoU Evil Twin Yang Imperial IPA Mikkeller To From Via 2011 Evil Twin Yin Imperial Stout Mikkeller Monk’s Elixer / Belgium Evil Twin Monk Suffers Serious Sugar Rush on Barbados Mikkeller Wet Hop Kellerbier Evil Twin Södermalm Hipster Ale

Bar Great Harry is located at 280 Smith Street on the corner of Sackett Street, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.

Wednesday, March 7 - Deviant Dales IPA & Hops and Heifers Release Party @ The Rye House, Manhattan:

Oskar Blues has two big brews premiering this spring and they want you to try them.  Nine lines will be pouring on Wednesday - Nitro Dale's Pale, Nitro Old Chub, Oaked Old Chub, Deviant Dales and fresh Hops and Heifers.  There will also be plenty of Colorado styled chow - steaks, sliders and the type of oysters you can only get in the Rockies.

Nothing like some brew to help you choke down those kind of oysters.

The Rye House is located at 11 West 17th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues, Chelsea, Manhattan.

Thursday, March 8 - Stone Brewery Tap Takeover @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

We're all well versed in Stone Breweries many pours.  That only makes it more enjoyable to have a night with all of them to yourself.  They'll be dominating the taps at Bierkraft, including two special cask selections.  Check out the list:

Draft:

Belgo Old Guardian

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Union and Berkeley Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
Friday, March 9 - The New York Beer Company Grand Opening @ The New York Beer Company, Manhattan:
We love the Empire State.  We love people who appreciate what New Yorkers create - from food, to whiskey and especially our beers.  We love drinking it and are great at brewing it.  The New York Beer Company is our kind of place then.  Boasting 40 draft and over 50 bottles it promises to give you something delicious to drink - however unlike other massively stocked beer bars this ones got a theme.  The selection is mostly centered around NY beers - Sixpoint, Empire, Bronx Brewery, Brooklyn, Kelso, Middle Ages, Coney Island, Blue Point, Ithaca, the list goes on and on.  That New York State of Mind song never made more sense than right now.
The New York Beer Company is located at 321 West 44th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue, Hell's Kitchen/Theatre District, Manhattan.

They'll be showcasing Evil Twin and Stillwater, while bringing along samplings from many other breweries. Check out the beer list:

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of August 14, 2011

Graham

It happened today - you looked at your calendar and started to get depressed.  We've all noticed that as of today it is the mid-point of August.  Summer is almost over - and that is a depressing thought.  We're already starting to feel it slipping away.  It's been an especially hard summer for Manhattanites - street temperatures in the heart of the city hitting well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, air-conditioners keeping everyone inside cool but pumping out waves of hot air for the rest of us, concrete hot enough to cook an entire turkey and that beautiful skyline blocking any sort of breeze from giving any respite.  So this week the Beer Friends are giving Manhattan a break. That's right - this week every NYC Craft Beer Event is happening outside the center of New York City.  From Brooklyn, to Jersey, to Westchester (first ever I believe!) we've got beer events for everyone else in the Tri-State, multi-boroughed area.  Check em' out!  And watch out for the Manhattan yuppies!

Monday, August 15 - Brooklyn Brewery "Ghost" Night @ The Diamond, Brooklyn:

Talk about black ops - this event might not even exist.  It's the kind of thing that gets blacked out in government documents.  That shady characters with dozens of names and passports engage in only to disappear into the fold.  Some people may or may not have found some brew that may or may not exist and it may or may not be served TONIGHT at a bar that may or may not be real.   Actually, it's all very real - there are four bottles of incredibly rare and specialized brews that sound, to be honest, made up.  Which makes them all the more desirable.  Here's what we're looking at:

Crochet Rouge Rose - Local 1 aged on chardonnay and pinot noir lees. Crochet Rouge Riesling -  Local 1 aged on reisling lees. Barrel Aged Cuvee Noire - Self - explanatory Black Ops Late Bottle Vintage 2007 - Self-explanatorily AWESOME!

There will also be drafts of Blast, Sorachi Ace AND the debut of an all new Brooklyn brew called "Radius."  As if that wasn't enough awesome in your Monday night they'll be pouring the Brooklyn Brown through  the cask engine.

Just remember, keep this under wraps - you definitely didn't here about this from us.  Actually, you totally did and should tell all your friends you heard it from us too.

The Diamond is located at 43 Franklin Street at the corner of Calyer Street, Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Tuesday, August 16 - Tuesday Night Tastings with Sierra Nevada @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Brooklyn's beer selling masters at Bierkraft will be featuring Sierra Nevada brews and the sales-rep Brian Dwyer as the next installment of their Tuesday Night Tastings series.  The Tuesday Night Tastings events are a great way to get to know a brewery's style and in this case, to help you remember why you love a brewery that you're familiar with already.  We all know how Sierra Nevada rolls and we all love it.  If you haven't had a sampling of Sierra recently then hit up Bierkraft for tastes and pints of Torpedo IPA, Pale Ale, Tumbler, Life and Limb and Ovila Saison.  You get some old, some new and some a rare one to tide over your secret or not-so-secret Sierra Nevada lovefest.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue, between Union and Berkeley Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Tuesday, August 16 - Sam Adam's Beer Lovers Choice @ The Cloverleaf Tavern, New Jersey:

Who says Jersey doesn't get a say?  We certainly don't.  In fact at the moment they're one of the only advertised places that do get a say - in this years Sam Adam's Beer Lovers Choice that is.  Every year Sam Adam's asks you, the customer, to choose between several at first and then narrowed down to just a couple of brews for the newest member of the Sam Adam's family.  This year the choice is between an Oaked Ale or a Maple Pecan Porter.  The people are divided and the lines have been drawn.  Head out to the Cloverleaf Tavern in Caldwell, NJ this Tuesday for a chance to voice your concern - an have a few pints of each!

The Cloverleaf Tavern is located at 395 Bloomfield Avenue in Caldwell, NJ - Driving Directions Found Here

Wednesday, August 17 - Meet the Brewer: Evil Twin @ The Double Windsor, Brooklyn:

Networking is huge.  And unless you're a brewer the only reason you'd come to this event has nothing to do with networking.  You'd most likely show up, having heard of this Danish brewer and his legendary status, expecting the best.  Then you'd taste the beer.  After it blew away your highest of expectations you'd insist that you meet him, only of course to be reminded that he's from Scandinavia and not in town.  Except he is.  And he's at the same bar you are.  Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø of Evil Twin brewing (of which he IS Evil Twin brewing) from Denmark will be bring a range of his brews - Ryan & the Beaster Bunny, Wet Dream, Katz Pis, Before, During and After Christmas Beer and Biscotti Break - as well as his famously vast knowledge of beer brewing.  At this point you will inevitably decide that even though you work as a hedge fund manager/teacher/lawyer/doctor/sanitation worker/subway train driver/mayor/president of the USA/David Beckham/Madonna that networking with this man is imperative for success in your life.

The Double Windsor is located at 210 Prospect Park West between 15th and 16th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Friday, August 19 - Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA Night @ The Lazy Boy Saloon & Ale House, White Plains:

It was a dark, late night in June (or maybe July or August).  The Pony Bar was mostly empty, not a soul to be seen (realistically there were probably around 8 - 10 people to be seen).  That's where my love affair started.  A taster of a strong elixir  was poured and handed to me with the explanation - "We can't serve it in anything bigger."  I was immediately intrigued.  What could be so dastardly, so impressive, so BIG that it could only be served in a 6 oz. tasting glass?  I brought it up to my lips, took the first sip and fast forward over two years later and I will search draft pours of brew out at every opportunity.  The Lazy Boy Saloon & Ale House, White Plains' brightest craft beer bar will be tapping a keg of 120 Minute IPA this Friday at 8 pm.

We anticipate that you will be out of luck acquiring a pint around 8:15.  So get there early.

The Lazy Boy Saloon & Ale House is located at 154 Mamaroneck Avenue between East Post Road and Maple Avenue, a short walk from the White Plains Metro North stop, in White Plains, New York. (Or you can drive in)

Saturday, August 20 - Ballast Point Tastings @ GRAB Specialty Foods, Brooklyn:

After this Beer Friend's recent trip to Ballast Point Brewery there was no way I was going to leave this one out!  Head on over to GRAB Specialty Foods for a sampling selection of one of San Diego's hoppiest breweries.  The full line up of brews has not been released but we can only anticipate Sculpin, Big Eye and other hop-monsters to be pouring this Saturday.  Make sure to pick up a growler of SoCal to take home with you for this weekend's summer barbecue or lazy day at the park!

GRAB Specialty Foods is located at 438 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

There you have it all you Beer Friends out there!  Enjoy adventuring to far off places - like Brooklyn - and locations you only dreamed existed - like White Plains - in search of your favorite, rare and always delicious craft brew.  We'll see ya at the taps!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 17

Graham

Hello all you Beer Friends out there!  I'm sure by now you have all heard that Nebraska Brunette Nut Brown is the 2011 Beer Friends Final Four Champion! Congratulations Nebraska!  It was an amazing tournament this year but if you're anything like me then you've been wandering around aimlessly, trying to find something to fill the void now that it's over.  I have just the thing for you:  Sours, Kegs n Eggs, Evil Twins, Breakfast Stouts from Kentucky and a Cask Beer Festival in Brooklyn. I think that should do the trick...

Tuesday, April 19 - $10 Tuesday Tastings 'April Sours' @ Jimmy's No. 43, Manhattan:

April Sours bring May Flowers?  I think so, but you won't have to wait until may to get those flowers.  Jimmy's No. 43 is offering a selection of sours to sample this Tuesday night as part of their weekly $10 Tuesday Tastings series.  Sours are a very intriguing beer to sample, so there will also be beer experts on hand to walk you through their brewing process and what to look for while drinking them.  Also, how to properly conceal the pucker your face is trying to make so you don't look like a beer wuss in front of all your friends.

Jimmy's No. 43 is located at 43 East 7th Street (downstairs) between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, East Village, Manhattan.

Tuesday, April 19 - Kegs and Eggs with Smuttynose/Lagunitas @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan:

Are you looking for something to do Tuesday morning? Say around 8 AM-ish?  Well it's Spring Break and if you're like any adult who's been working for this long it doesn't matter if it's vacation, you're still up at the crack of dawn because the 'man' now has your lazy soul.  Well, sleeping late may be a forgotten experience, but you can still stick it to the man by waking up and mixing your scrambled egg's with some craft beer at the Spring Lounge in NoLita.

Smuttynose and Lagunitas are teaming up to bring you breakfast with a craft beer bang.  Expect eggs, potatoes, bacon, biscuits, gravy and $1 off any Lagunitas or Smuttynose draughts!  The list is TBA at the moment, but we all know that any Lagunitas and Smuttynose brew pairs deliciously with breakfast.  Don't try to hide it.

See you before work at the Spring Lounge, located at 48 Spring Street on the SW corner of Mulberry, NoLita, Manhattan.

Wednesday, April 20 - Weyerbacher Night @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan:

Weyerbacher is one of those breweries that when you hear their name you're think:  I love those guys! - Almost immediately.  It might take you a minute or two to remember what brews back up those emotions, but it doesn't matter.  Weyerbacher = Awesome.  It's in the dictionary. That's what kind of a staple they are in the craft beer world.  They are also headed to Rattle n' Hum on Wednesday with a booming list of reasons why the name Weyerbacher is synonymous with American craft beer.  Check it out:

On cask: Double Simcoe Hops Infusion Quad Old Heathen Verboten (BPA, not available in NY) Papa (Brewers select series, style TBA)

On tap: Blithering Idiot Merry Monks Quad Insanity Heresy Double Simcoe Hops Infusion Slam Dunkel Lima Tiny Tiny 12 13 14 15 Old Heathen IPA project 1 Quatro Crazy Fireside Pumpkin Blanche

Boom goes the Weyerbacher.

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Wednesday, April 20 - Evil Twin and Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n' Hum:

Every person has an Evil Twin somewhere out there.  The Beer Friends have The Wine Friends, Rattle n' Hum has Off the Wagon, Paul (of the Beer Friends) actually has something like 12 evil twins (seriously, he's set a world record for dopplegangers) and Boulder Brewery has...the Evil Twin Brewery from Denmark.

Not really.  Boulder Brewery, a famed American craft brewery, is helping to welcome Evil Twin to the United States as they tour our great land sharing their best Danish craft beer.  I'm sure it won't taste very evil.  Check out the line-up for both breweries below:

Evil Twin Brews: Before, During, & After Xmas – 8% - Double IPA Soft DK (Soft Dookie) – 10% Imperial Vanilla Stout Disco Beer – 10.5% Imperial IPA/Chardonnay blend Yin – 10% Imperial Stout Yang – 10% Imperial IPA

It's suggested you make a pretty badass Black & Tan out of the Yin & Yang.

The EXTREMELY Impressive Boulder Beer List:

Hazed and Infused, Mojo, Sweaty Betty, Buffalo Gold, Planet Porter, Singletrack, Flashback India Brown Ale, 2010 Killer Penguin, Mojo Risin', Nitro Obovoid, Never Summer, 2010 Obovoid, Oak Aged American Red, Chocolate Porter, Nitro Mojo Risin' and 2009 Killer Penguin and Apricot Mojo.

Still not impressed?  Let's age some of those in Bourbon Barrel's for ya':

Bourbon Barrel Aged - Singletrack, Vanilla Porter, Obovoid, Never Summer and Spiced Never Summer.

If you still aren't impressed then just don't show up.  Stay home actually.  Forget about craft beer and start drinking more water.

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Thursday, April 21 - Founders Beer Festival @ Standings, Manhattan:

Founders Brewery has quickly become one of the most sought after craft breweries in America.  They've done this by producing creative, quality and over-the-top flavorful brews that are also extremely drinkable.  Some of their most famous and desired brews will be pouring this Thursday at Standings (right above Jimmy's No. 43) in the East Village.

Founders Draft List:

Kentucky Breakfast Stout (yes, it's true, it will really be there!), Red's Rye Pale Ale, Pale Ale, Cerise, Double Trouble Imperial IPA.

And as usual, FREE pizza at 8 pm.

Standings is located at 43 East 7th Street (upstairs) between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, East Village, Manhattan.

Friday, April 22 - Sunday, April 24 - 5th Annual Williamsburg Cask Festival @ dba Brooklyn, Brooklyn:

dba Brooklyn alongside NYC craft beer guru Alex Hall of Gotham-Imbiber are hosting the 5th Annual Williamsburg Cask Beer festival this year is promising to be better than ever.  They are keeping the draft list secret for now but the Beer Friends will be working hard to bring you some top secret info, or at least spawn some great rumors about what will be pouring.

Here's what we do know:

- 16-18 rare and delicious casks tapped simultaneously.

Sounds pretty enticing to me.

dba Brooklyn is located at 113 North 7th Street between Berry Street and Wythe Avenue, Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Saturday, April 23 - Troeg's Can Only Give You Everything @ GRAB Specialty Foods, Brooklyn:

We're resurrecting an old favorite of the Beer Friends here - the Saturday Tasting Series at GRAB Specialty Foods in Brooklyn.  This week they'll be featuring Troeg's Brewery out of Pennsylvania who promises to be bringing you everything they've got.  Expect free tastes of Troegenator, Sunshine Pils, Hopback Amber and Java Head Stout.

While you're there hit up the GRAB Specialty Foods Beer Store with your growler in hand and bring home a growler from one of their 10 draft lines.

GRAB Specialty Foods is located at 438 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
