Hashtag Battles Season 2 - Week 12!

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Week Twelve  -  Denver Broncos vs Kansas City Chiefs (#GreatDivide vs #Boulevardbrew)

This week the Mile High Broncos face the struggling Chiefs.  The Broncos have answered critics and modern day medicine with a healthy Peyton and a much improved defense, while the Chiefs have fallen way short of expectations as many in the business had them winning the AFC West - funny to think how these two franchises were linked to the Bill Belichick coaching tree.  This week we explore which apple has fallen furthest in #hashtag battles!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Twelve  -  Denver Broncos vs Kansas City Chiefs (#GreatDivide vs #Boulevardbrew)

The Broncos were facing a lot of questions in the off season.  First - could Tebow actually be the QB of the future?  Can they win with a offense like that and what strain would that put on the defense?  Then came the Peyton Manning sweepstakes and the Broncos (surprisingly) came out on top again (but seriously - would want to play football in the same state as your in-laws?).  This Peyton development sparked an entire new set of questions about Peyton's health and the offense mixing with one another - then the season began with one of the toughtest schedules in the NFL.  Peyton impressed in the first game, threw a couple picks in another and continued to mix well with his new teammates.  This week more questions about the running game with Willis out and Hillman (youngest player in NFL) and kno-show Moreno spliting carries with Lance Ball getting the 3rd Down looks.  With a franchise full of questions, you might wonder why so many - rewind to the Josh McDaniels days in which a young hot shot coach was given absolute power of a franchise and decides he's going to be the next Bill Belichick - the problem was Bill Belichick is Bill Belichick because of the amount of time he had spent in the league and been kicked around so many times (see Cleveland Browns, New York Jets).  Fortunately for the Denver Broncos, they answered those questions quickly and moved on - unfortunately for our next team in hashtag battles, the Bill Belichick coaching tree continues to grow... them right towards the top overall pick.

Great Divide has been a Beer Friends favorite for a long time.  Always excited to see their stuff out in NYC, we've visited the brewery on our Colorado Brewery Trip and review quite a few brews (or maybe just drank them).  With the changing seasons - we come into Stout territory and Yeti is always on tap.  Yeti Stout comes in a bunch of different variations and with such a solid beer, you can't go wrong when you mix it with espresso, chocolate or even make it Belgian style.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a proud franchise with a loyal fan base.  Many forget the glory days of the AFL vs NFL Superbowl and how the Chiefs were constantly representing the AFL or how Arrowhead is one of the most difficult stadiums to play in - well the Chiefs this year are so bad they make anyone have selective memory.  When you're franchise player was a backup to two struggling NFL QB's in his college days and the second best option is the ND product would dropped 15 spots in the draft?  Romeo did wonders as a interm coach, but this team has bigger problems than a coaching change.  With bold moves and questionable draft picks, this franchise has hit new lows (including brown paper bag sightings), crowds leaving at half, and even the fans paying for airplanes to fly over with banners expressing their discontent.  The only question for the Chiefs is, when to hit the reset button and try again.

Boulevard Brewing comes from Kansas City and you can find their line of delicious brews in deep beer stores in NYC, which is sad because they are wonderful.  The first two that come to mind are the Dry Stout and Amber Ale, but the Smokestack Series is also very tasty.  With this fantastic brewery being located in Kansas City - at least the Chiefs fans can drown their sorrows in great good beer, if they can continue to watch the game for that long.

Week Five - Denver Broncos at New England Patriots (#lefthandbeer vs #samadamsbeer)

This week marks the return of a classic QB matchup, Peyton vs Brady. Let the butt kissing begin. Every network has this game circled as an in-form Brady (at 2-2) welcomes a coming-back-to-form Peyton (at 2-2) to Gillette Stadium for a nice close shave. I'm sure McDaniels will have plenty of film to look at of Peyton before the game, mostly taken from the stands during Broncos practice sessions.

The Denver Broncos have had a roller coaster few years. A Hall of Fame coach was fired - even though he thought he was going to get lunch with the owner - and a young hot -shot coach was brought in... and quickly shot down any hopes of a successful season. John Fox rode in last year with a reformation brewing under his feet, and that shaky QB with the cult following led the Broncos to a improbable season and a playoff win. In the off-season Jesus Tebow left for the Three Ring Promise Circus and in stepped Peyton Manning, the 4 time MVP and Superbowl winner. The questions came about the neck in the offseason, and the arm strength after the first few games, but last week Peyton looked good against the Raiders. At 2-2 the team is improving and Peyton is getting more comfortable with his receivers - rumor is this week they'll be wearing they're alternate blue jersey's with a horseshoe logo so Peyton gets is mojo back against the Pats...

Left Hand Brewing Company has swept over the East Coast and it seems to be playing off in spades. They have quietly become one of the biggest brands out of Colorado, not named New Belgium, and Left Hand's presence in the NYC market is a huge bonus for this Beer Friend and roughly 8 million other beer drinkers in the city. Last spring Left Hand introduced the Milk Stout Nitro Pour that has instructions to pour a beer. "Pour hard" it says with QR code to a video, even proving that Left Hand is embracing the social media market. With quality in their six packs (see Stranger Pale, Milk Stout, Sawtooth Ale, and the Fade to Black Series) and amazing-ness in their brewmasters series (see Smoke Jumper and Wake Up the Dead) they continue to impress.

The New England Patriots seem(?) to have struggled so far. The question mark is because they are 2-2 and some New Englanders are acting like Bobby V took the team over in the first few weeks. The Golden Team is led by the Golden Boy and continues to lead the NFL in the "Patriot Way" (special Hashtag appearance by Teddy Bruschi - because that's all he seems to say with a camera on him). The Cardinals snuck into New Foxboro and stole a game (enough though they have turned out to be a pretty good team, and the Patriots were victim to a questionable Replacement Ref call (but honestly, who hasn't been this year?). Now the two masters square off with Brady and his clown car of short WR and Chewbacca-like Tight Ends facing a Broncos defense that they put up 86 points against in a regular season and playoff game last year - basically like Brady was playing Madden on Rookie mode. Is the Broncos defense improved enough to stop them, this will either be another great battle in the Peyton vs Brady War or a sideshow where Brady just keeps pressing the spin button...

Sam Adams is on the Mt Rushmore of Craft Breweries. Jim Koch starting brewing intense flavors years ago and turned it into a business he loves. Along with Sierra Nevada and Fat Tire, these breweries were brewing such fantastic products that it started to pull fans away from the Coors and Bud's of the world (for a whooping 5% of the market, as it stands today - but it's a start). Sam Adams has gotten tired in some peoples minds but with their barrel stuff, and the yearly contest winners, they are always on the cutting edge of the craft beer scene (including the seasonal beers). Even though their IPA might taste like a "Sam Adams IPA", they've released a "deconstructed series" which allows beer drinkers to taste individual hops within the brew itself... genius - but we knew that all along.

Hashtag Battles Week Seventeen!

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#bearrepublic) vs (#breckenridge), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Week Seventeen: Oakland Raiders (#BearRepublic) vs Denver Broncos (#Breckenridge)

Alright, we know that these two teams aren't actually playing each other - but they do battle for the one remaining playoff spot in the AFC.  With all the other divisions locking it up early and the Steelers with 11 wins safely in, there can be only one.

Oakland has been an up and down team.  With enough talent to secure the West a long time ago - penalties and injuries prevented them from popping the division champ cork earlier.  Now Oakland has given a small ransom to Cincinnati for Carson "INT machine" Palmer and finally (kinda) finding their stride.  With a game at home vs the Chargers (which was undoubtably thought of in preseason as a divisional crown battle), the Raiders are in a great place to advance if the Chargers play like the Chargers Against the Lions and not the Chargers Against the Ravens.  Bear Republic has been doing dynamite stuff for a while now and there's no stopping them now.  Bear Republic has one beer that always pops up, Racer 5 and never disappoints.  Along with Mach 10 (double IPA) and Red Rocket I never know which to pick, but rest assured - I'll be happy (and drunk after a few Mach 10's) and that's when my own personal fouls come in to play...

The Denver Broncos went from the Andrew Luck sweepstakes to playoff contenders.  Riding the Tebow train to a 7-1 record in 8 games, the Broncos, Denver and the entire Mountain Time Zone were riding high.  A blowout loss to New England didn't derail the train - Tebow played well.  A blowout loss to Buffalo with 3 or 4 INT's (depending when you're reading this) starts the doubts up again.  Typically its a team game, but a INT and fumble both returned for a TD in 18 seconds of game play hurts any team efforts.  But Tebow lovers rejoice, there is still hope in a "win and you're in" scenario in Denver this week and the Denver Tebows could reach the playoffs for the first time in 5 years.  The Rub?  Kyle Orton, the first QB to face a team he started for earlier in the season... will Tebow or Orton come out victorious?  Meanwhile the real QB's of the league (Brady, Brees, Rodgers) look down on these mere morals from the Mount Olympus of Passer Rating and wonder what it's like on the other side.  Breckenridge Brewery is a old Colorado favorite with multiple locations across the state.  Recently Breckenridge has been popping up in NYC and the Beer Friends are thrilled.  The classic Avalanche Ale and Vanilla Porter are the vets of the brewing team and Small Batch 471 is coming on strong -

Hashtag Battles Week Fourteen!

Week Fourteen: Indianapolis Colts (#3Floyds) vs Baltimore Ravens (#flyingdog)

Oh Indy.  Remember those years when you flirted with perfection?  Now you're flirting with a different type of perfection, a perfect 0-16.  Move over Detroit Lions... you might have company -  including the fact the Indy has aquired 3 (yes 3!) former players from that 0-16 Lions team.  Remember what happened the last time a Stanford QB got selected by a awful Colts team (Baltimore at the time)?  He demanded a trade and the legacy of the Denver Broncos began (that was after Elway started lining up under center and not the left guard).  Now Indy has an aging QB with a neck issue and the possibility of signing a young stud QB.  Out with the old and in with the new?  Not that easy, if only we could figure out what they are thinking... might as well start following Jim Irsay3 Floyds is located in Munster, Inidana and produces beers found all over the US.  A personal favorite (more for the name) is Zombie Dust, but when  the big IPA Dreadnaught is on tap I'm always gonna grab one.  There's no quit for 3 Floyds and they are coming on strong - good thing because Colts fans everywhere are gonna need a drink after this season.

Baltimore returns to the hashtag battle arena with a brewery that just a short drive west, Flying Dog.  Baltimore has had a up and down season - while still 9-3, the loses were bad loses (Seattle, Tennessee and Jacksonville) and they had a close game against Arizona - this is not the make of a team that is aiming for the Superbowl.  However, the Raven's are getting Lewis back in the next few weeks with games against the hapless Colts and the San Diego "shoot ourselves in the foot" Chargers so look for 13-3 with the rest of the games winable.  Flying Dog used to be a Colorado beer, but then they (like the Colts) picked up and moved to the Baltimore area.  Fortunately the beer stayed the same and the dog themed beers continued to win awards, as well as the label art of Ralph Steadman.  The Gonzo Imperial Porter is always a favorite and never plays down to competition... taking notes Ravens?

Week Twelve: Rematch! Denver Broncos (#greatdivide) vs San Diego Chargers (#ballastpoint)

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable.  Pre-season I thought there was NO WAY we'd be in the hunt for the division title and felt that Tebow would sit most of the year, develop that throwing motion and we'd give it the old college try next year.  How wrong was I (except on the throwing motion part... jeez that's bad).  The Broncos have found their motivation and he sure does love Jesus - everyone seems to  have an opinion on Tebow and even the concept of "play to win the game" is tossed out the window because his mechanics.  Now I'm on a soapbox here and probably shouldn't be speaking for all Bronco fans but... We know he needs help in the throw/accuracy/strength department - we're not idiots, but the team rallies around him and plays their asses off for him - isn't that what you want in a leader?  Someone leading your football team?  Great Divide is always a leader.  Unbelievable brews are the name of their game and they are constantly winning awards and re-developing themselves (check the variations on Yeti Stout).  While one winning is unexplainable (2 for 8?!?!? Really Chiefs?) the other is easily explained... maybe this yin and yang will matchup in harmony to win this weeks Hashtag battle.

Being a Broncos fan I can admit that the season is laughable (Trust me, this is a new paragraph).  Misery loves company and a San Diego loss can be as good as a Denver win on somedays, but this is a new style for San Diego.  Typically slow starters, fast finishers, and out in the first round of the playoffs, the Norv Turner's might not even make the playoffs this year.  Typical all-star Philip Rivers can't connect with his receivers when it counts (but has awesome garbage time numbers) and the special teams are at it again this year-fumbling the game away.  Apparently the typically soft AFC West isn't gonna take it and there will be a fight for the right to be knocked out in the first round this year.  Ballast Point is another themed brewery out of San Diego, but -trust me- order a Black Marlin Porter and you'll start calling all porters Black Marlins.  The Sculpin IPA won gold in 2010 World Beer cup along with a little "brewer of the year" award... you know... no big deal. Perhaps Ballast Point can tutor Rivers in their winning ways and guide San Diego back to the playoffs (although I kinda hope not...).

And because football needs beer, we're starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Hashtag Battle Week Five Matchup: Denver vs San Diego (#newbelgium vs #stone)

These are two of the heavy weights in West Coast brewing.  California and Colorado are great beer producing states and fortunately San Diego and Denver both play in the AFC West = at least two games this year (I smell rematch!)  This is a great way to feature some fantastic breweries out west... let the hashtag battle begin!

San Diego has been tops in the AFC West for some time.  Top 5 in Offense and Defense last year - however, their special teams was a horror show that eventually kept them out of the playoffs.  Stone Brewery has been producing high quality beers even longer in San Diego (since 1996) but tend to knock it out of the park with their Special edition brews.  Can Stone Brewing Co. teach the Chargers a thing or two about special(ity) teams/beers and combine to win this weeks hashtag battle?

Denver, well... (this is a subject close to my heart -but I can admit it) the Broncos suck... a lot.  We are a shell of the once proud franchise we were (remember those back-to-back Super Bowl wins?).  Mike Shannahan lost his touch, Josh McDaniels was the wunder-kid hired to re-build the honor but instead acted like a small child with matches and burned the thing down.  Trading away all talent (and hurting the team for years to come) Coach McD was fired and old-school, run-first, solid-defensive-minded John Fox was hired. As the Broncos build back up they can look at the consistant model New Belgium has used for years.  New Belgium is (probably) the one brewery everyone is dying to get out on the East Coast - but New Belgium was smart, they didn't try for anything they couldn't do really well and are slowly building up for a (maybe) push into the NYC market (all pure speculation).  Can these two build together and work towards domination of their respective markets?
