Hashtag Battles Week Five

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#stone vs #newbelgium), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. And because football needs beer, we're starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Hashtag Battle Week Five Matchup: Denver vs San Diego (#newbelgium vs #stone)

These are two of the heavy weights in West Coast brewing.  California and Colorado are great beer producing states and fortunately San Diego and Denver both play in the AFC West = at least two games this year (I smell rematch!)  This is a great way to feature some fantastic breweries out west... let the hashtag battle begin!

San Diego has been tops in the AFC West for some time.  Top 5 in Offense and Defense last year - however, their special teams was a horror show that eventually kept them out of the playoffs.  Stone Brewery has been producing high quality beers even longer in San Diego (since 1996) but tend to knock it out of the park with their Special edition brews.  Can Stone Brewing Co. teach the Chargers a thing or two about special(ity) teams/beers and combine to win this weeks hashtag battle?

Denver, well... (this is a subject close to my heart -but I can admit it) the Broncos suck... a lot.  We are a shell of the once proud franchise we were (remember those back-to-back Super Bowl wins?).  Mike Shannahan lost his touch, Josh McDaniels was the wunder-kid hired to re-build the honor but instead acted like a small child with matches and burned the thing down.  Trading away all talent (and hurting the team for years to come) Coach McD was fired and old-school, run-first, solid-defensive-minded John Fox was hired. As the Broncos build back up they can look at the consistant model New Belgium has used for years.  New Belgium is (probably) the one brewery everyone is dying to get out on the East Coast - but New Belgium was smart, they didn't try for anything they couldn't do really well and are slowly building up for a (maybe) push into the NYC market (all pure speculation).  Can these two build together and work towards domination of their respective markets?

Featured Brewery: Breckenridge Brewery

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Breckenridge Brewery LogoThe Breckenridge Brewery is a favorite of Colorado folks with a few locations all over the state.  While the Original Brewery and Pub is located on South Main Street in Breckenridge, they have a location on Blake St. Denver across from Coors Field, a BBQ joint and brewpub in Denver, and a Ale House in Grand Junction.  Known for delicious beers, Breckenridge has a firm foothold in the brewery rich Colorado beer scene and doesn't look to be letting up any time soon.  On the recent Beer Friends Colorado Brewery tour we visited the Blake Street location to try a few beers and chat up a few bartenders.

A few details on the beers:

Avalanche Ale is one of their most popular beers and for good reason, this amber ale gives the famous Fat Tire a run for it's money in the amber scene across Colorado.  While Fat Tire is more readily available, strike up a conversation about Avalanche Ale with a bartender and prepare yourself for a detailed argument.

Vanilla Porter is a smooth porter with a heavy vanilla taste.  While overall smooth, the vanilla overpower many of the other flavors and is hard to tell what else is happening in this beer.  While not a awful beer, the main taste - and I realize it's called a VANILLA porter - is too overpowering for this Beer Friend.

Christmas Ale is a special beer during the seasonal brewing schedule.  Available during the winter months in bombers and 750mL, this is a fantastic present for any beer drinker you know.  This beer always gives enough of the holiday spices without tasting like a pine tree.

The Main Breckenridge Brewery is located at: 600 S. Main Street, Breckenridge, CO 80424 [googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=600+S.+Main+Street,+Breckenridge,+CO+80424&sll=39.756791,-104.991381&sspn=0.009056,0.020835&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=600+S+Main+St,+Breckenridge,+Summit,+Colorado+80424&z=14&ll=39.475659,-106.043712&output=embed&w=425&h=350]

Featured Brewery: Wynkoop Brew Pub

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! Upon the rebuilding project of Lower Downtown (LoDo) Denver it gave birth to plenty of new bars and restaurants in the area.  Many are still strong today and a favorite of locals before and after a Rockies game, one of the original bars/brewpubs was Wynkoop Brew Pub, founded in 1988.  Refurbishing a existing building from the 1888's, Wynkoop focuses on small batch beers to serve it's patrons and is always a popular gathering place during the Great American Beer Fest (GABF).  Wynkoop has a number of fantastic beers and - in all good breweries - a sense of social conscience.  The Silverback Pale Ale (now in cans!) donates fifty (5-0!) percent of it's proceeds to the Denver based Mountain Gorilla Conservation Fund.

The Wynkoop Brewpub is located at: 1634 18th St., Denver, CO 80202 [googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1634+18th+st+Denver,+CO+80202&sll=39.755307,-104.998398&sspn=0.036226,0.083342&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1634+18th+St,+Denver,+Colorado+80202&ll=39.753531,-104.998359&spn=0.009057,0.020835&z=14&output=embed&w=425&h=350]

The Brew Pub is open:

11a - 2 a Everyday!

Kitchen open until 11p Mon - Thurs, 12a on Fri and Sat, and 10p on Sundays

Beer Review 47: Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout

Brad

Hello Beer Friends Nation! With Great Divide Brewery winning awards year after year, Beer Friends had to take a second trip back - and third and forth - to sample some beers and feature them as the Six Pack of the Week.  This week we looked at Yeti Imperial Stout, a dark delicious beer that won multiple awards, most recently a 2009 Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, in Denver, Colorado.  The Beer Friends got their hands on the regular Yeti Imperial Stout, but there are a few varieties including - Oak Aged, Chocolate Oak Aged, and  Espresso Oak Aged, with plenty more opinions out there.  Yeti!  I believe!  Stout!  Beer!

Great Divide Tap Room Hello Beer Friends Nation!

A highlight of the Beer Friends Colorado Brewery Trip was Great Divide Brewery in Denver, Colorado.  Great Divide was a great time and well worth the drive and parking in downtown Denver.  PLUS it's within walking distance of a few other breweries and hosts a Denver breweries walking tour (Click here for info).

The Tap Room itself has a very friendly atmosphere.  The bartenders are more than willing to share Great Divide's fantastic brews with you.  You get four free samples when you come in that you will quickly want to follow up with a pint or two of your favorites.  Everyone in the place were regulars, even if they hadn't ever been there before and they all seemed to know each other.  One Beer Friend even randomly ran into a guy from his father's hometown who, through not so many degrees of separation, knew all the same people he did.  Great Divide is a great brewery, the brews great beer and seems to attract a great clientele.

Great Divide has always had a good showing in Beer Competitions, including this Year's GAFB with Colette a saison winning Silver in Category 64: French and Belgian Style Saison.  Past awards include A gold medal in the 1997 GABF (Hibernation Ale) and silver (Denver Pale Ale - DPA), 1998 Silver Medal in World Beer Cup (Hibernation Ale) and Bronze medal (Denver Pale Ale), Gold medal in 1999 GABF (Denver Pale Ale), Bronze medal in 2002 GABF (Denver Pale Ale), 2003 Silver Medal at GABF (Hibernation Ale), 2005 Silver Medal GABF (Yeti Imperial Stout), 2006 Gold Medal (Old Ruffian Barley Wine) and Silver Medal GABF (Hibernation Ale) and Bronze Medal (Denver Pale Ale), 2007 Gold Medal Australian International Beer Awards (Hercules Double IPA), Bronze Medal 2008 GABF (Yeti Imperial Stout) and three Silver Medals in the Australian International Beer Awards (Hercules Double IPA, Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, Titan IPA), Silver Medal at 2009 GABF (Yeti) and two Bronze Medals (Hoss, Old Ruffian) and earlier in 2010 a Bronze medal for Hoss in the World Beer Cup. Wow... impressive!

Brad's Taste:

Hades- good beer, smooth and light, but with a crispness not found in a lot of Belgian Golden Ales.  The ABV on this is high (7.3) but leaves no alcohol taste.

Hoss - This is a complex beer with a lot going on.  Nothing overpowering creates a nice smooth beer, this Rye beer has more flavor than the typical rye flavor.  I can certainly understand why this has won a few awards in the past two years!

Denver Pale Ale (DPA)- This is heavier than the typical Pale Ale.  Full flavor but not as light, I'm really finding a collection of good pale ale's in Colorado (Dale's, Midsummers) but now how do I find them in NYC?

Rumble IPA- Oak aged IPA that is light on hoppiness and heavier on vanilla.  This is a interesting take on a IPA with less focus on the hops and more focus on the flavors that compliment them.

Smoked Baltic Porter- This is a awesome beer.  The smoky blends perfectly with the smoothness of the porter, a lot of flavor and range in a single pint.

Graham's Tastes:

Samurai - I'm not usually a huge golden/blonde ale type of guy, but this one was pretty quality.  Smooth with a golden refreshing flavor that went with the August temperatures outside.

Hercules Double IPA - This Imperial/Double IPA is big and hoppy.  As a self-proclaimed hop-head I fell in love immediately.  After having a sample I order a whole pint of it so I could keep that flavor rolling.

Yeti Imperial Stout - The stickers with the picture of a Yeti that read "Believe" aren't the only great thing about this stout.  It is full of flavor from roasted malts to a tad bit of coffee.  It is smooth and still packs a big stout punch.

The Great Divide Tasting Room is located at 2201 Arapahoe Road, Denver, CO 80205 [googlemaps http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&q=great+divide+brewing+co&fb=1&gl=us&hq=great+divide+brewing+co&cid=0,0,16728202394686972799&ei=RFeWTI3JIcWclgfOyN2nCg&ved=0CCEQnwIwAQ&hnear=&ll=39.753671,-104.988568&spn=0.006295,0.006295&iwloc=A&output=embed&w=425&h=350]

Old Chicago Bar and Restaurant

Brad

Old Chicago will always have a special place in this Beer Friends' heart.  My home bar – it’s a chain restaurant – is located on the North End of Colorado Springs off the Woodmen Exit. Old Chicago is a typical bar/restaurant, serving deep dish pizza, calzones, salad bars and pasta. What sets Old Chicago apart is the beer list. Old Chicago is my Holy Grail of drinking.  This is where I learned about beer, about good beer, and the difference between bottles and draft -- basically my beer-education.

Old Chicago has the infamous World Beer Tour, a brilliant way to drink your way around the world.  Old Chicago has a standard list of 110 beers, which can increase to over 150 on any given night.  When you sign up for the World Beer Tour (WBT), you receive a card that keeps track of the beers that you drink and can be used at any Old Chicago location.   As you reach certain beer marks (5 beers, 15 beers, 25 beers, and so on…) you receive a number of different prizes including Foamer Bucks (Old Chicago coupons), bottle openers and t-shirts.

Every beer has a number attached and you run down the list and try to collect as many beers as you can… swipe your card and try again the next night.    As you travel through you pick from a variety of beers, everything from the Macro breweries like Coors and Bud, to the local Micro-brews – supporting the local economy.

In addition to the larger WBT, Old Chicago periodically holds “mini-tours,” which are month-long theme events. For example, during March, the mini-tour will bring you great Irish beers, both in draft and canned. October brings, obviously, an Oktoberfest mini-tour, featuring German beers as well as other fall theme beers from local breweries.

Although a chain restaurant, I believe Old Chicago does a pretty good job reflecting the beer taste of the area.  I’ve visited Old Chicago all over Colorado and each has a great sampling of the local breweries – Denver Old Chicago often features Breckenridge Brewery, the Fort Collins and Greeley area features New Belgium Brewery and Colorado Springs often features Bristol Brewery.

Overall a great attempt to be a local brew house operating under a chain restaurant name.

*Special thanks to Kevin Bell for his contributions and discussion on this post… he was my original Beer Friend.
