Hashtag Battles Season 2 - Week 9!

Hello Beer Friends Nation! In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles! Using we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What's a hashtag battle? When you're drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we'll use to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Eight -  Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints (#yardsbeer vs #abitabeer)

This weeks "Monday Night Conversation Between Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden" features the overhyped Eagles against the disappointing Saints.  For the Eagles, last years free agent splash turned into this years "abandon ship!" and no one is safe, including the inconsistant QB who flip flops on himself in news conferences (appropriate this time of year...)  The New Orleans Saints had a disappointing season before the season even started.  With more rumors about them than in a high school lunchroom, they became the villans in the new safety first NFL, and the long contract negotiations of the Big Easy's Chosen Son even had Saints fans wanting to march out.  Who switches their fortunes this week in hashtag battle?  Read on to find out!

The Philadelphia Eagles have it rough.  Seemingly always second fiddle in the NFC East to the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants, which they may beat in the regular season, but are left looking in on the playoffs.  They started the season with a few big wins (3) by a combined 4 points - but that was during the Era of Replacement Refs.  In the A.R.R. (After Replacement Ref) Era the Eagles are winless and Philly Phans are demanding changes.  If the Eagles are smart they'd make some changes before the snow comes for the crowd to hide their batteries in, or before they get angry and just throw C's and 9-volts anyway.  Now Mike Vick and Andy Reed are in a career relationship - much like Jack and Rose in Titanic... remember what happened to that ship?

Yards Brewing Company is located on the Delaware River that separates New Jersey from Philadelphia, and opens around noon on the weekends - the only reason I know this is because I have (multiple times) taken the NJ Transit from Penn Station in NYC and arrived at 30th Street just in time to catch a metro train to Yards when they open, it makes for a awesome weekend trip.  Yards was the creation of Tom Kehoe and Jon Bovit in 1994 when they wanted a decent English style beer (which were few and far between in Philadelphia at the time).  So they brewed, won some awards and expanded, brewed won some awards and expanded, and so on.... Now the warehouse offers tours on the weekends from Noon til 4pm, with a tasting room opening at Noon everyday and closing (usually) around 7pm.  Yards also has the amazing "Revolutionary Ales" series which features recipes (closely followed) of a few of our Fore Fathers (also located on the $1, $2, and $100 dollar bill).  Even the modern day stuff is delicious, with their Saison and Cape Hope 2xIPA being two of this Beer Friends favorite of the style.

The poor, poor Saints.  The NFL's punching bag in the off-season to show they were tough on players safety (all the while wanting to expand to 18 games - two more games for players to get hurt!) while Saints players allegedly put down money for hard hits on opposing players.  With the way the Saints defense is playing this year - I'd buy them a hamburger if they'd actually tackle someone.  However, the focus of the Saints hasn't been on defense for a few years - that high flying, aerial attack was supposed to put up 35 a game to allow the defense to break down a little.  Unfortunately Sean Peyton isn't allowed contact with the team and can't tell them that "Defense wins Championships" or at least better than a 2-5 record.  Last week against the Broncos, the Saints folded like Greg Williams in front of Roger Goodell, allowing Peyton to throw all day from his wheelchair and back-brace (which only proves they aren't paying for hits anymore - Peyton is a violent sneeze away from more neck issues).  The Saints are featured in a Monday Night game that was supposed to be featuring two offensive juggernauts - but instead features a middle of the road Eagles team vs a pass heavy (1st in league at 316 ypg) can't run to save their lives (32nd at 72.6 ypg) Saints that round out the bottom three on passing yards and rushing yards given up.  The plus side of this matchup?  With all the high scoring this will look more like a basketball game which New Orleans and Philadelphia are probably more interested in now anyway.

Abita Brewing Company is located just outside of New Orleans, and any beer drinking Big Easy'er will tell you how delicious they really are.  Being located close to the Big Easy, Abita has a laid back party kind feel - with brews like Purple Haze and Mardi Gras Bock - they capture the Cajun feel perfectly.  However, Abita is also a very caring institution and with brews like Restoration Ale and S.O.S. (Save Our Shores) they help those in need by getting others drunk (and helping those people out as well).  Abita is a little tough to get in NYC, but whenever I see Turbodog, Jockamo IPA or Andygator available - I'm sure to grab one.  Abita is definitely a needed stop on a future brewery tour and a Beer Friend review... anyone got a request?

Let the battle begin! Tag with #yardsbeer or #abitabeer,  the battle begins Sunday morning and ends Monday night… drink to support your teams!
