We are on to Round 3 of the BFF4. Finally down from 64 to the sweet 16. There are 4 teams left in each bracket as we whittle down to the Final Four. The first match up in the Green Bracket is a big one. Russian River's Pliny the Younger has its biggest test of the tournament yet. The very special, and very rare, Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stout is probably the most dangerous #12 seed in this tournament. Both of these beers are rare and have a lot of fans. This match up has the potential to be an instant BFF4 classic.
The other match up in the Green Bracket brings us #3 Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout vs #7 Bell's Black Note Stout. Founders KBS is the favorite in this match up, but Black Note Stout shall not be taken for granted. These beers have a lot of similarities, both are Bourbon barrel aged stouts and both are from the great state of Michigan. Can the underdog from Kalamazoo take down the favorite from Grand Rapids?
The first match up in the Blue Bracket brings us two more barrel aged beers. First is the favorite in this bracket, the #1 seed, Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout. This beer is the very popular Breakfast stout that is aged in barrels that have previously aged Bourbon and Maple syrup. It has to go up against an Imperial stout that has been aged in a variety of barrels. Three Floyd's Oak Aged Dark Lord Imperial Stout is arguably as sought after as any other brew in this tournament. It is released with a party and concert on Dark Lord Day. I have heard of some big openings for craft brews, but this sounds epic. Both of these beers deserve to be here, but only one can move forward. In a year full of barrel aged beers, which one of these will move on to the Elite 8.
The other match up in the Blue Bracket pits a Russian Imperial stout against an IPA out of Minnesota. Deschutes Brewery pits The Abyss up against Minneapolis Town Hall's Masala Mama IPA. In a tournament full of big barrel aged stouts can this Russian Imperial survive or will the strong and steady IPA move on to face the bigger and badder barrel aged brews?
