I was in a craft beer bar recently when someone brought up the fact that this year we are already seeing summer brews hit the taps even though it has just turned the corner into spring. What happened to all those quirky interpretations of the different versions of what a spring beer should be? The light copper ales, floral IPA's and crisp browns? Just because it's been a mild winter we're all of sudden dismissing a whole season? I'm all for the milder temperatures, however I'm not sure I'm ready to ditch a style that has just so recently begun diversifying itself. Maybe this week's beer events will contain some solutions... Tuesday, March 27 - Shmatlz: Coney Island Slideshow Night @ Rattle n' Hum, Manhattan:
Spring-time screams the circus. Well, actually probably not at all but maybe we should start that connection. To help, Rattle n' Hum will be hosting Shmaltz Brewing Company this Tuesday with their selection of Coney Island brews. If you wanted to be responsible then you'd maybe go for a couple of their regular offerings and call it a night. Fortunately for you they've included some entertainment - Danny Vomit "The Human Blockhead" and Heather Holiday "The Sword Swallower." So you're just going to have to try all 10+ plus lines and enjoy the entertainment. What a terrible night right?
Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between 5th and Madison Avenues, Midtown East, Manhattan.
Tuesday, March 27 - East Coast vs West Coast Heavy Metal @ Sunswick 35-35, Queens:
Who doesn't love a craft beer bar that audibly enjoys heavy metal? Hops and guttural screaming obviously go together. If you share the same philosophy then this Tuesday is your night. Ballast Point and Lagunitas will be bringing their West Coast Heavy Metal brews and bands to compete against Smuttynose and Victory. The only way to truly know which coast rocks harder is by tasting all the tap lines. And we must seek the truth.
Sunswick 35-35 is located at 3502 35th Street at 35th Avenue, Astoria, Queens.
Wednesday, March 28 - Ahab's Rehab! @ The Stag's Head, Manhattan:
If this event doesn't free willy then I don't know what will. What I do know is that you are going to flipper the hell out to this whale of a tale happening at the Stag's Head this Wednesday. Harpoon is bringing some great brews in honor of Ahab to Manhattan this week - Quad, 2010 Barleywine, Double IPA, Spruce Tip, Rich and Dan’s Rye IPA, UFO Wheat and Black IPA. There will also be New England Clam Chowder croquettes. Don't you love novels and beer events about the sea?
The Stag's Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue, Upper East Side, Manhattan.
Thursday, March 29 - Breckenridge Draft Event @ The Stag's Head, Manhattan:
Skiing is nice, but this city really should be know for it's namesake brewery. Breckenridge will be pouring several of their brews at Bierkraft this Thursday. That will include their usual lineup, some seasonal varieties and a special keg of the 471 IPA aged in Stranahan whiskey barrels. Whiskey barrel aged IPA's? Jesus, that's brilliant.
Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Union and Berkeley Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
