New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 10, 2011

This is a week for settling.  The yeast, hops and malts are settling in the first ever Beer Friends home brew (can you guess the style?).  We're settling into the excitement of being able to drink it in a month.  The first week of baseball is over and our favorite teams are settling into the season.  We're settling into weekly trips to our favorite ballparks to support our favorite teams with a hotdog and hoppy pilsner.  The first week of April is over and the weather is settling nicely into the fact that the rest of us are already aware of:  it's time for spring.  We're settling into bombers of our favorite saison's imbibed from our favorite grassy spots in Central Park. One thing we're definitely not settling for is crappy beer.  If you feel this is not the case then read below - I have liberated you from beer-suckdom.

Tuesday, April 12 - Oskar Blues Tasting Night @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Oskar Blues is a brewery that repeatedly comes up in conversation during our video reviews, part because of the information we gathered in the great can vs. bottle debate, part because we go crazy for their beer.  Well, so do the guys at Bierkraft.  Yvon Pasquarello, the Brand Manager for the brewery that brought us Gub'na, G'Night and our favorite hoppy pale ale - Dale's Pale, will be visiting Bierkraft with our favorite canned brews and a whole lot of Oskar Blues info.  You can also expect to taste some rare, draft only releases.  Someone should be clever and write a joke here about a draft beer from a can brewery.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Union and Berkeley Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Tuesday, April 12 - Troeg's Brewery Night @ Rattle N' Hum, Manhattan:

Name three good things that came out of Philly.  Go!  Cheesesteaks, Fresh Prince and...Troeg's!  (Also Victory)  Notice how we didn't say the Phillies.  Troeg's will be bringing an impressive draft list over to Rattle N' Hum on Tuesday.  It was previously kept a secret but you are in luck.  It was just released.  Gaze on this:

Scratch #42 Javahead Hop Back Dream Weaver Troegenator Pale Ale Mad Elf Nugget Nectar

Did someone say Troegenator on draft?

Rattle n' Hum is located at 14 E 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues, Midtwon, Manhattan.

Wednesday, April 13 - Dogfish Head "NO SUCK" Beer Event @ The Downtown Bar and Grill, Brooklyn.

Dogfish Head is what you call a wild card.  Yea sure they distribute nation wide and their brewmaster got his own tv show.  But if you ever call them a sell-out they will whoop the crap out of you - your taste buds that is.  In an effort to provide the world with non-suck beer, Dogfish Head spends 24/7/365 brewing their passionate hearts and slightly deranged heads out to bring you beer that does anything but suck.  It wasn't enough though.  No they are bringing it to your city in their "No Suck" Beer Event Series.   Head to the Downtown Bar and Grill in Brooklyn for the likes of this anti-suck medication:

Wednesday, April 13 - Sierra Nevada Ovila Series Release Event @ Pacific Standard, Brooklyn:

I've written about a lot of events here at the Beer Friends.  This one has got to be one of the coolest.  Sierra Nevada is opening up its style profiles, straying pretty far from its hoppy California roots to brew a beer in the Abbey tradition.  The cool part is they're not brewing it on their own -  they brought in Cistercian monks of New Clairvaux.  Real live Abbey Monks brewing real live Abbey brews and the real life profits are going to benefit the rebuilding of the monks chapter house in New Clairvaux.   This is the first in their Belgian series and what a way to start.  Hit up the release party, meet some monks, maybe meditate while sipping on an Ovila.

And don't worry, if you're Phil they'll also have Bigfoot 2011, Glissade Golden Bock, Pale Ale and Summerfest Pilsner.

Pacific Standard is located at 82 4th Avenue between Bergen and St. Marks Place, North Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Saturday, April 16 - Cask Ales and Oyster Shuck @ Bierkraft, Brookyn:

When you refuse to settle, you get rewarded.  We hope you didn't settle for anything less than the best this week because you're about to get rewarded.  Pretty awesomely as well.  Bierkraft didn't settle either.  They wanted it all.  It all = an outdoor beer garden to enjoy the best craft beer NYC has to offer.  Thank you Bierkraft for not settling.  Now they want to throw you, and themselves, a party.  Hit up Bierkraft this Saturday for an epic cask ale and oyster shucking festival.  They'll be shuckin oysters in the new beer garden all day long and they'll be pouring up oyster shucking refreshments of the likes of the list below:

Ithaca Flower Power Great Divide Espresso Yeti Kelso Oyster Stout Blue Point Pale Ale Brooklyn Blast Greenport Harbor Ahtanum IPA Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball Green Flash Hop Head Red Sierra Nevada Style King Ghidorah Captain Lawrence TBA

Oysters, Brooklyn Blast and a new oyster stout from Kelso.  Shuck me an oyster and call this heaven.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Union and Berkeley Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
