Upset special! The first round of this bracket was a lot tighter than I thought it would be. Yards had a good show against against Flying Dog but ultimately lost out. However, Stoudt's took it to the favored Victory Prima Pils and snuck through to the second round. Also, The brewery from Tampa came in and beat the #1 seed Nugget Nectar. It was a good show by Troegs on this one, forcing a tie and overtime against Cigar city, but it seems Cigar City was a bit underrated at a #16th seed... we will obviously have to recalibrate the computers at BF HQ for next year's bracket. On to the second round!
Cigar City Jai Alai IPA 16 vs 8 Flying Dog Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale. The brewery in Frederick fared the best in the first round escaping with 2 beers, however, they face stiff competition this round. Up first they have the 16 seed (in number only) Jai Alai IPA. Cigar City so far having a good showing so far this tournament, how long will this cinderella story last?
Next we have a 5 vs 4 with what should be the tightest match up of the second round. Victory Yakima Glory up against Flying Dog Raging Bitch Belgian IPA. This match up is fun for me because I enjoy both of these beers so much. Two different takes on the new hybrid IPA styles, Yakima being of the roasted malt "Black" style of beer, (which I have fallen in love with over the last year) Raging Bitch pairs the hops perfectly with Belgian yeast to make this a Belgian beer that even Phil might like...
11 vs 3 With Stoudt's Scarlet Lady up against another PA heavyweight in Troegs Troegenator Double Bock. Stoudt's, a smaller brewery out of Pennsylvania has already taken down a heavy favorite from Downingtown, and now looks to upset the 3 seed from Harrisburg. The battle for the Keystone State moves on to the second round.
the 7 vs 2 match up is closer in numbers than it perhaps should be. A personal favorite in Nebraska Brewing Brunette Nut Brown Ale has a steep uphill battle against a perennial favorite Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA. Sam and his beers from Delaware have made a lot of noise this year by being delicious, but also by being on featured on television in the show "Brew Masters." Dogfish Head beat another favorite of mine in Great Lakes Christmas ale in the first round. Will Nebraska fare better?
